4.0 out of 5 stars Good - but not much for your money, 20 Jun. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
My criticism is not about the quality of the comprehension exercises, but the number. There is simply not enough to justify the price.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not enough detail, 20 Jun. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Although the book summarises the necessary skills to answer both C.E papers and provides examples, there is a lack of practise exercises and has now been superseded by the new spec in terms of its layout and structure.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent analysis of why Russia has developed the way it has., 5 Dec. 2013

Ledeneva's subject is difficult to assess because it concerns the invisible power networks at play in Russian politics and society. She has excellent contacts from within the system - as it is so known - who lift the lid on the subtleties of how these informal influences work. Her conclusions are not just relevant for in the Russian context but applies to any system with weak formal networks: law, governance, institutions etc...and how 'personal' relationships are used to compensate for this lack but also crucially undermine it. Her ambivalence to the merits of 'systema' articulates the difficulty of thinking outside this structure and illustrates how difficult it will be for Russia to adopt transparent European market mechanisms.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting summary - poorly translated, 5 Dec. 2013

It is a useful introduction to the subject and is reasonably priced for the kindle edition; however, it is poorly formatted and translated which makes it a less enjoyable read than it might have been. There are better books on this subject out there.

The ISEB Guides cover what comes up in the exam. It's not going to teach you to speak Latin. Nuff said.

5.0 out of 5 stars The template for every fugitive story ever written, 11 Sept. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Rogue Male (Kindle Edition)
Consistently gripping chase caper, narrated by a mysterious aristocrat who may or may not have attempted to assassinate a fascist German leader. He eludes his pursuers across Europe with English pluck, guile and bloodymindedness in the most convincing circumstances. He makes the feats of later action spy creations appear outlandish. What's more, Household has an excellent eye for landscape and the psychology of the hunted. You will read this in one sitting.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nothing startlingly original but useful, 11 Sept. 2013

Solid lesson plans and ideas without saying anything new. It provides a useful framework for students to expand their writing. Don't bother buying the kindle edition. The whole point is to use the exercises for photocopied handouts.

4.0 out of 5 stars Introduction for the initiated, 11 Sept. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
While this is an excellent book on the mechanics of poetry: prosody, form and analysis, all sadly neglected in our 'what is this poem about,' lines of inquiry. However, this is not the book to give somebody to convince them to give poetry a try. Rather it will supplement the enjoyment of those who already read it. Some of the metrical examples will interest only those with a back ground in English Literature. In short, an excellent book with a misleading title.

4.0 out of 5 stars More practical than any other contemporary military theorist, 16 Dec. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Most of Machiavelli's general military principles are derived from the antique De Re Militari, but he expounds them with practical examples. There is an interesting section on the use of Swiss pikemen, concerning their use and weakness in Renaissance warfare. His synthesis that the idea army should include a mixture of pikemen and men-at-arms in his battalions is a valiant attempt to marry the two competing philosophies of ancient military tactics. Like the Roman model for this manual, however, he is vague about the role of the cavalry and his dismissive attitude towards the artillery in modern warfare is indicative of some weaknesses in this polemic. But it is far more illuminating than other military manuals and the question and answer format of the treatise makes this more engaging than it might otherwise have been.
