Not perfect, but great for desk use.
4 out of 5 stars
Not perfect, but great for desk use.
Observations:* Power on is instant, where as power off takes about 3 seconds before the speakers go quiet.* Some reviews mention a bad power cord. Mine was fine, and full sized.Pros* Louder than I'll ever need for nearfield listening with bookshelf speakers.* Analog volume dial. I prefer this to digital controls, but this dial isn't without drawbacks (see below).* Size. This is perfect for a desktop.* Doesn't get hot. Or even warm.Read the cons below knowing that this is my chosen device and I'm very happy with it. I use it daily...Cons* The Dial - Plastic. Metal dials are always better. - It's got an exponential increase in volume. You turn it about 3% and it goes from "off" to "uncomfortably loud" (again, in my nearfield setup). Make sure you keep the source volume (PC in my case) turned down a bit so you get more dial space to work with. - There's a channel imbalance at the very low end of the dial. Right side only matches volume when you turn it up a bit more. If you do the above and turn down source volume this becomes moot. Still annoying however.* Ground noise is very present. After getting annoyed by it, I tested *just* the amp (no incoming source) with a conditioned power supply, on a separate desk with good speaker wire. I'm using Dali Zensor 1 speakers, so reasonable quality. There is a hissing I can hear about 1 meter away. Sometimes I can hear it through quiet music. A full sized amp would generally have a much lower hiss, but I don't want a beast filling up desk space. The size of this device is worth it, and I couldn't find another similarly priced option. On balance I'm happy to live with it. FYI this hiss does not increase when you turn up the volume. It stays constant, and is likely resulting from the soldering and built-to-price nature of the device.* There was a very slight height imbalance with he back left foot. Bugged me so a couple of slices of electrical tape fixed that.Overall I do recommend this for desktop use. If it's anywhere with more space, consider other options.

I bought this amp to replace a 20-year old Hi-Fi amp for my computer-based audio system.
When buying anything for Amazon, I usually read expert reviews on-line as well as customer reviews on the Amazon website.
However, with kit like this, there aren't many online reviews, I suspect it's because the usual Hi-Fi "experts" don't take this sort of thing to be serious Hi-Fi. So based on the customer reviews alone, I was moved to buy one.

The SA-50 is well-built,the power switch is spring-loaded but feels firm, the volume knob is large enough to be comfortably operated, and feels smooth, firm and reliable. A qualty unit. The power supply is fairly substantial, it is rather like a laptop supply, and not simply the usual "small-cube-with-a-cable".
It is fairly straightforward to set up, I didn't have any speaker cables with suitable plugs, so used my exisiting cables with bare wire terminations. This requires a little care, the bare cable should be cut so that when it is twisted and fed through the hole in the terminal at the back of the SA-50, it doesn't need to be wrapped around or protrude too far, as naturally the terminals are closer together than on a conventional amp. I didn't have any problem tightening the terminals with my fingers, I am of average build. If you have suitably fitted cables, you'll have no problem connecting your speakers.
I connected my DAC/Headphone amp via RCA connectors, the DAC is fed by USB directly from my computer. With one input only, the SA-50 is a power amp, and some might connect their computer via the on-board sound output, I don't know how good (or not!) on-board sound is nowadays, but for best sound quality I would recommend a USB DAC as a pre-amp, which bypasses the on-board sound.
The sound is clean, clear and neutral. I have the volume control set at about 3/4 of full, and adjust volume via my DAC. It gives plenty of volume and makes snare drums sound sharp, bass guitar sound deep, and lead guitar has a satisfying bite, or an enveloping bluesy smoothness, depending who I'm listening to!
I am very impressed by this unit, it represents great value, and gives a sound different to, but as good as, the old amp which it replaces. It fits neatly on my computer desk (actually a large gaming desk). Sometimes, audio equipment can develop an even better sound with use, so I'll update this review if necessary.
In the meantime, I can't argue with such a good price for so much sound. Highly recommended.
    EDIT
After a couple of weeks, the unit kept cutting out on the left channel, then the channel failed completely. This seems to have happened to other Amazon buyers too.
I took the cover off and saw that the wires to the output connectors we not attached with sufficient solder, so I re-soldered them all, just to make sure. The amp is back to normal, so maybe this is a fault which could be easily fixed if it happens to you, save having to send it back, but of course it would invalidate the guarantee.

Small desktop amplifiers are becoming a popular item and there's plenty of competition between Chinese manufacturers. Topping and SMSL seem to be the main brands in this sector. The SA50 is simple - there's just one set of RCA inputs - one set of speaker outputs, that's it. On the front is the on-switch and a volume control. I think some hifi gear suffers from trying to put too much into one box - I'd looked at the Topping VX1 which also features a DAC and a headphone out, but reviews suggest the headphone out is a rather poor tapped output from the speakers. So I decided to keep things simple. I've driven Wharfedale and QAcoustic speakers from the SA-50 and the result is as good as any hifi amplifier I have owned. Obviously it's not ideal if you want more than one input, but there are plenty of options there. SMSL makes a great headphone amp/DAC in the 793II which you can then feed to the SA-50. My SA-50 currently receives a feed from my Xonar DX soundcard, but I'm adding an SMSL M2 USB DAC soon. Anyway, the SA-50 is superb. I'd happily build a regular hifi system around one, let one a desktop one. Buy one before they realise what a fantastic piece of kit it is and demand drives the price up.

Edit: Well here I am in August 2015, around eight months after I bought the SMSL SA-50 and it is broken. One of the two RCA inputs has failed leaving me with one stereo channel. So fun while it lasted, but iffy build quality.

I wanted a good powerful cheap amplifier to drive a couple of speakers in my garage and I wanted it to be small ..... I wanted to be able to listen to music and radio from my phone whilst doing those little jobs that never seem to end up being little jobs...... well, I can't praise this little amp enough !
I have had a number of very nice amps, speakers and have always spent my spare time with music playing. I recently went wireless with a Sonos system which is very convenient and sounds okay. This little amp drives a couple of Wharfedale diamond III speakers and the source is provided by a mp3 player and my phone ( note 2 ). The sound from something so small and compact is quite honestly, amazing. At first I had the amp connected to a couple of monitor speakers ( purchased off Amazon ) and it sounded tinny and hollow..... I was a little miffed as I expected a lot more...... I then changed the speakers and wow ! This amp drives the speakers superbly. The sound is crisp, bassy, balanced and most of all clear.
If you want a small amp that has more power than it should have and a sound that far exceeds your expectations then this is quite simply the only choice ( the 60 is very very good aswell ).
The company who supplied this were excellent. I had contact from them to confirm delivery and to enquire whether I was satisfied with the product..... I most definately am. Highly recommend this product.

5.0 out of 5 stars Potenter, neutraler und dynamischer Kraftzwerg
Reviewed in Germany on 13 September 2018

3.0 out of 5 stars Buon ampli ma non Hi-fi
Reviewed in Italy on 27 April 2018
    L'amplificatore, in classe D, è dotato del chip TDA7492, accreditato di 50W per canale a 6 ohm o 40W a 8 ohm, con un'alimentazione da 25v 5/6A.

    Punti a favore:
    - ottima costruzione, robusto, esteticamente gradevole
    - molto compatto
