Yes, the darts can hurt if they are fired too close especially if they hit you in the face. If used at a sensible distance and confined to body shots they are absolutely fine. Sorry I haven't tried it with chalk darts, it uses Nerf Elite darts (no sucker on them), in theory it should do if they are the same size.
