Top customer reviews
I am not going to tell yo what tri-zone technology is and why these are meant to be so good, because plenty of other reviews and the GHD website will tell you that.
I have been using my faithful GHD IV's for almost 6 years now and they have never let me down. However, I wanted a new pair so I could keep one at my office and one at home. I was a very lucky girl at Christmas and received the GHD V (Silver) and the GHD Eclipse. Before deciding which one to keep, I thought I would test both.
To help you understand my results, my hair type is long, medium thickness and mostly straight with a slight wave before straightening.
GHD IV vs V vs Eclipse...
First off, there is a definite improvement in the V and the Eclipse compared to the IV. They both feel easier to use and glide through the hair a little better. I would even argue that both leave the results for longer.
Between the V and The Eclipse, this is where it gets tough. Let's start with:
I could barely notice any difference in the results on my hair from either one. Maybe, the Eclipse left it a a little shinier but to be honest I'm struggling to find an obvious difference.
Now, one of the USP's (unique selling point) of the Eclipse is that it doesn't heat up on the outside. Before using them I thought that would actually hinder curling. The silver V's become very hot not he outside (event hotter than the IV) therefore my theory would be that would aid curling as the hair wraps around the outside. I was worried the Eclipse would fail here, but in actual fact I couldn't notice any difference in the curling and both performed well. Although I did find the hair slided out of the Eclipse, during the curling process and I had to work harder to keep it between the plates. Where the silver kept the hair neatly in the plates throughout the glide motion. The silver also ran down my hair a bit quick and slicker.
RESULT: The GHD V silver by a very small margin
According to the sales pitch the Eclipse keeps your results for longer, particularly from humidity. Again, here I didn't notice a difference. If I compare to the IV then yes there is an obvious difference but not between the V and Eclipse.
PROTECTING YOUR HAIR
Here I can only go on the sales pitch and therefore the Eclipse wins hands down. It give me the same results as the V and produces them at a lower temperature, that has to be a good thing.
RESULT: Eclipse wins
VALUE FOR MONEY
At the moment the Eclipse is on sale for £145 (usual price £195. Compare that to a V at current price of £105, and with very little difference in results then hands down the V wins. However, if you use your GHD's, like me every day then I think the extra investment might be worth it in the long run. Still, £195, or even £145... too steep!
RESULT: GHD V wins
A few extra things I noticed. The V silver is slightly thinner in body which means if your prone to putting your GHD's in your handbag or overnight bag then they will take up a bit less room. The Eclipse are chunkier.
I did find the V silver also ran through my hair quicker, where you have to be slower with the Eclipse (maybe so the plates can adjust to hair type if this tri-zone technology is to be believed) but, the Eclipse could straighten more hair at once, so I didn't need to many little sections.
In summary, I actually like the Silver metallic GHD V's. And it breaks my heart to send them back, but as they were both gifts and I didn't pay for them, I'm keeping the Eclipse for the simple reason that they are meant to be better for my hair. But my advise would be if you're looking to upgrade and have fairly normal hair then save some money and get the V.
