Before I received these I spent days researching reviews on the Eclipse and never really found the answers I was looking for, particularly on curling and comparisons to other GHD models, so I am going to try and address those in this review.

I am not going to tell yo what tri-zone technology is and why these are meant to be so good, because plenty of other reviews and the GHD website will tell you that.

I have been using my faithful GHD IV's for almost 6 years now and they have never let me down. However, I wanted a new pair so I could keep one at my office and one at home. I was a very lucky girl at Christmas and received the GHD V (Silver) and the GHD Eclipse. Before deciding which one to keep, I thought I would test both.

To help you understand my results, my hair type is long, medium thickness and mostly straight with a slight wave before straightening.

GHD IV vs V vs Eclipse...

First off, there is a definite improvement in the V and the Eclipse compared to the IV. They both feel easier to use and glide through the hair a little better. I would even argue that both leave the results for longer.

Between the V and The Eclipse, this is where it gets tough. Let's start with:
STRAIGHTENING
I could barely notice any difference in the results on my hair from either one. Maybe, the Eclipse left it a a little shinier but to be honest I'm struggling to find an obvious difference.
RESULT: Draw

CURLING
Now, one of the USP's (unique selling point) of the Eclipse is that it doesn't heat up on the outside. Before using them I thought that would actually hinder curling.

I had used my usual GHD's for three years, and my weak, dry curly hair was becoming dryer and frizzier than ever as a result of using them. I was beginning to think that maybe I should stop using the ghd's. Then I read about the new Eclipse range and decided to try them out. The experience of using them is different, for a start I have to press harder on the plates to stop my hair sliding through un-straightened. Also, I have to go slower, which is fine, because the temperature is lower and it's not going to burn the hair. When you switch them on, there's a computerized sound, and blue lights light up, very futuristic! But what a difference they make! I don't know how it works exactly, but after straightening with the Eclipse my hair now has a much shinier texture, and even looks silky, which is great. I also use the GHD heat protector spray for the first time, which is really good. I was very worried about the price of the straighteners(£145 just before xmas) , but if this is the result then I think it's definitely worth it. I would recommend the Eclipse to anyone with frizzy or curly hair.

My ancient Remington straightener was working perfectly but i decided to treat myself with a new straightener after all these years. Saw an advert for the eclipse, and when i read this: "It can also style larger sections of hair in a single stroke, making styling significantly faster on all hair types." I was instantly SOLD! Anything that saves me time in the hideous morning rush has got to be a good thing, right? I ordered one that night. It arrived pretty promptly, in ridiculously overengineered packaging, but heyho. I've only had it for a week and I will update this again in a few months time as I think one does need to get used to a new straightener before making too many judgements.

Here's what i love:
- The on/off switch is placed very cleverly so you won't switch the straightener off by mistake while you're styling. (so annoying when that happens and you realise you've been trying to straighten with a cold straightener)
- When you switch it off, it chimes. (helpful when you're on the way to train station and you're thinking, YIKES, did i switch the straightener off??? and then you remember that you heard the little sound.)
- BEST of all, it switches itself off after 30 minutes of not being used. GENIUS. I still switch off at the plug when i'm done but it's good to know it has this built in safety feature.

Verified Purchase
Bought for my daughter who loves straight hair and says this bit of kit does it so well. Only issue is it comes with a continental two pin plug and you have to buy your own UK adapter to make it work. For the price paid thought this could have been included with purchase hence only 4 not 5 stars.

The eclipse don't get as hot as the classic. This is why they're better for your hair! I've had mine just over2 years and they have stopped getting hot. Asked ghd to repair and they said to expensive to repair. Not in my opinion - this means I'll have to get a new set. Prefer original classics. Last much longer and repairable. Think I'll be buying cloud 9 in future!
