We have freedom of religion but there also needs to be freedom FROM religion.

Religious agendas shouldn't supersede the rights of people who choose not to affiliate with religion. Religion should not infringe on the rights of others.

I don't see why we shouldn't have a separation of Church and State, nor why we should let religions maintain their tax-free status.

Snowyflake says:
America's constitution is clear about the separation of church and state yet we see the increasing infiltration of religious views into secular government and education. Britain has a state religion, The Church of England, where the Queen is the Head of the Church. However, Britain allows for the freedom of religion, thought and conscience and yet we see the increasing infiltration of faith schools where the next generation are indoctrinated into their various faiths, be it Christian, Jewish or Muslim. Education is for learning not indoctrination. Children should have the freedom from religion until they are of an age to make an informed decision.

Curious irony, isn't it - the USA has the formal separation yet religion influences almost everything; we don't, and religious influence is minimal.

Nice idea. It won't happen in my lifetime that's for sure. This ties in with my feeling that indoctrination of children at a young age is child abuse. Until that stops we are on a hiding to nothing. We protect children from sexual predators to some extent by having an age of consent and we should have the same for religion.... an age of reason.

That would be a very good idea Nestov, and I agree with you on the point that indoctrination is a form of child abuse. I am very glad that when my daughter talks about religious education from what she has been doing at school, I can give her both sides of the story and not just one side that she gets told at school.

Norm Deplume says:
Hi Stu,

When you say "both sides" it prompted me to think. Creationists keep trying to insert their views, in one guise or another, as an alternative to science. What sort of reaction would they produce if they were told that their children would be obliged to be taught an alternative to their religion. Any protest would be hypocritical, so I am sure it would be welcomed.

Stu says:
Well Norm if they are taught properly they should be taught by an atheist also so that they fully understand, but it would confuse their young minds a bit would it not.

As a reborn theist spin, maybe you would be so kind as to inform us atheists what actually did cause the big bang, apart from your underwear when you throw them on the floor?
