Kleist says:
Alfred North Whitehead one remarked that:

'The total absence of humour from the Bible is one of the most singular things in all literature.'

What is the reason for this?

Or is Whitehead simply wrong?

I visualise Heaven as a sort of retirement home, where the staff and residents sit around cackling while they watch continuous re-runs of "Game For A Laugh". The Job episode is probably a favourite.

That's a damn good reason to sin.

This is a very good question considering that some of the world's best comedians and comediennes are Jewish. :) Maybe, the bible is just one running gag that a couple of out of work Hebrews put together while schlepping in the desert one lazy afternoon and thought they'd try it out on their friend, let's call him Moses, to see if he would buy the gag. Who knew that Moses would believe every word of it and go running off into the wilderness with 20 or 30 thousand of his most intimate friends, get lost cuz he was too macho to use a map and wander around aimlessly for 40 years. Maybe, Revelations is the punch-line :)

Yes, maybe we just don't see the irony of it.

But lets face it, virgin birth etc. is just begging for it...

How can they not be great comics. They have to do something to relieve the tedium.

J. Forbes says:
Henry, I have to point out that you omitted the word "American" between "best" and "comics".

Upon reflection, even the word "American" ignores South, North, and Central America.

So, to rephrase, I have to point out that you omitted the words "North Central American" from your post.

North Central America is home to a backward race of fundamentalist Christians (and a few dissenters) who comprise 4% of the world's population.

They are a belligerent and acquisitive bunch, and consequently their ill-gotten wealth makes them more powerful than mere numbers would suggest. In terms of human capital (the things that make people civilised), however, they comprise not quite so much.

There are, of course, exceptions...

Henry James says:

No members of that "backward race of fundamentalist Christians" understand Jewish Humour.
