Why Did God Kill 2 Dozen Kids in Oklahoma USA with a Tornado?

Henry James says:
Today a tornado hit an elementary school in Oklahoma, and estimates are that 2 or 3 dozen kids were killed.
Did God not know this was going to happen?
Did She know and was punishing the children for their wickedness?
Was He powerless to prevent it?
Or was He at the beach, taking in the sunshine?

Melanie says:
Wow, this viewpoint is old. God as high court judge/junior school headteacher/gamemaster. Really?

Maybe if there is a God, s/he doesn't actually operate like a human. Maybe the nature of the divine doesn't fit into our limited understanding and it's simplistic to try to make it do that.

Maybe the force of the tornado had more to do with our destruction of the planet and disruption of its processes and systems, through things like wanton use of cars, air conditioning and heating, and taking the plane so that we could sit on the beach taking in the sunshine?

Only saying maybe.

Henry James says:
Yes Melanie, good going.
It IS an old question.
It's called the Problem of Evil.

Lots of people who have grappled with it, people smarter than you or me, have failed to come up with a response that is very satisfying to very many people.

So "they" (you) just say: We just don't understand.
No, you don't.

God, Universal Consciousness, Great Spirit, He, She, or whatever someone calls it, is not punishing anyone, tornadoes are a result of natural weather systems. People are in the wrong place at the wrong time when a tornado happens.

[ t o r n a d o e s : c a u s e s - o f - t o r n a d o e s ]

"Tornado conditions are caused when different temperatures and humidity meet to form thunderclouds. In the United States, warm, wet winds from the Gulf of Mexico move northward in spring and summer, meeting colder, dry Canadian winds moving southward. The place where these two winds meet is called a dry line. High, dry air coming from the north piles on top of low-moving, moist Gulf air at a height of over 10,000 feet. The warm southern winds try to rise, but the cold northern air blocks them. This clash causes the warm, trapped air to rotate horizontally between the two air masses. At the same time, the sun heats the earth below, warming more air that continues to try and rise. Finally, the rising warm wind become strong enough to force itself up through the colder air layer.

When this occurs, the cold air on top begins to sink, sending the rising warm wind spinning upward. The warm winds rotate faster and faster in a high column. When the updraft is strong, the column can rise to heights of 10 miles or more, twisting at speeds of up to 100 miles an hour. The rotating winds produce strong storm clouds about 70,000 feet high, sometimes spreading 10 miles wide.

This storm system may stay intact for several hours, at which point its thunderclouds are known as supercells. These storm clouds can send down an inch of rain in a mere ten minutes or shower the ground with baseball-sized hailstones. Supercells can accumulate into huge clusters, forming a line almost 100 miles long, which can then develop into mesocyclones."

Light,

u say..People are in the wrong place at the wrong time when a tornado happens........................ but i think you will find that the people are exactly where they wanted to be at the time they wanted to be there. it is the Tornado that, for them, is in the wrong place at the wrong time.

just saying

We are on page 200-300 of a 2,000 page book, only God, who is infinite, and above human understanding knows the answer to this question. We live in our own era, i.e. page 300-400 and understand things from an historical, experiential and intellectual context, all of which, has been seriously affected by sin. Our understanding is so minute compared to God's almighty wisdom and power. We do not have the answers now, neither did people from the beginning of time, i.e. Pg 1, neither will we be anymore enlightened at the end of time, Pg 2000. God is eternal and outside, above and beyond all time, yet He knows all about the affect of sin. It caused Adam to loose fellowship with God and brought about a sinful race and an Earth that was affected by sin, so much so that the Bible say's that even the Earth is waiting to be restored to it's original state as when God made it. We call tragic events, natural disasters, others call them, "Acts of God," but the reality is, the very Earth is under sin's curse until Pg 2000, when Jesus-Christ will come again and make all things new.
Yes, it's difficult when we do not have the entire picture and our minds are so limited because of sin. But there is coming a day when God will completely reverse the order of the Earth as we now know it and create a new Heaven and a new Earth. The truth of the Bible also is that Christ-Jesus has come 2000 years ago to reverse the affects of sin upon our lives. He did this when He took the punishment for our sin, which was death, upon himself when He willingly went to the cross instead of you and me and took the punishment we should have taken. As God's only perfect and spotless Son, He took away the sin of the World when He was punished at the cross by His Father 2000 years ago. The Bible say's that if we believe this message according to the Bible and receive Jesus-Christ as our sin bearer into our hearts and lives, that, we can and will become the children of God. John 3:16, "For God so loved the World, (You and me), that He gave His only begotten Son, (Jesus-Christ), that whoever believes in Him, will not be eternally punished, but will receive eternal life. That's the good news of the Gospel, Jesus-Christ has come to make all things new, to reverse the curse of sin upon the Earth and upon humanity. One day He will come again and receive us to Himself and will also create a new, sinless Heaven and a New, sinless Earth. No more death, sorrow, pain, bombs, war, politics, indifference, sadness, all old things will have passed away, and all things will then be renewed.
Thank you for reading this response,
Colin Bleakney

Pretty useless book then.

Aidan says:
Henry Oklahoma is in an area known as tornado ally. People there know this but still choose to live there and raise their families in this potentially dangerous place. Also the US is one of the largest producers of green house gases that is causing these more extreme weather events and is yet the most sceptical about it, ie not signing up to international agreements agreements limiting there production. As much as their will be people angry at a God that they don't believe in there are those who will thank God for being saved and trust those they have lost into Gods care. The bible does not say the world is perfect or some how being a Christian will protect you from harm, we have free will to choose and live in a chaotic world.

It is a complicated issue however the whole problem disappears if you remove the assumption that there is a god.

I don't understand either, and my heart aches for those who are grieving. All I do know is that, in your world, dreadful things happen and all you can do is despair. In my world, dreadful things happen and I have someone to pray to (and get angry with) about them, I know that loving Christians will be working right now to try to bring comfort, I have hope that there is a better life ahead, and that one day I WILL understand. I know which world I prefer - and you are welcome to join me in it when ever you are ready!

CB,

"We call tragic events, natural disasters, others call them, "Acts of God," but the reality is, the very Earth is under sin's curse until Pg 2000, when Jesus-Christ will come again and make all things new."

SO what you are saying is that god COULD do something, but won't. He's waiting for a certain point in the future - until then he's not doing anything. Why do you pray then? You've already said he's not listening at the moment.

" But there is coming a day when God will completely reverse the order of the Earth as we now know it and create a new Heaven and a new Earth."

Why not now - to prevent the suffering and tragic loss of life including innocent children? Like you said he CAN do it, but chooses not to in favour of waiting for a date in the future. If he can do it but won't then he is malevolent. WHy not give us a warning and have the tornado go just to the side of town without killing anyone?

"The truth of the Bible also is that Christ-Jesus has come 2000 years ago to reverse the affects of sin upon our lives."

But you claimed the earth is under "sin's curse" at the moment. So Jesus has NOT reversed the affects of sin has he? The world continues as if sin is in control for 2000 years since Jesus. It is as if he made no difference.

"He willingly went to the cross instead of you and me and took the punishment we should have taken."

But, according to you, we are STILL being punished for our sins. Can you explain why, if Jesus took our punishment for us?

"He took away the sin of the World when He was punished at the cross by His Father 2000 years ago."

No he didn't. You just said the earth is under sin's curse.

" One day He will come again and receive us to Himself and will also create a new, sinless Heaven and a New, sinless Earth."

Wishful thinking. 2000 years ago he took our punishment for sin. We are still being punished. He made no difference. Why not? Why is earth under "sin's curse" when Jesus died to remove it?

G. Heron says:
Colin Bleackney

As I understand it in your view when Adam and Eve disobeyed god, this created sin in the universe and led to many very obvious physical changes within the universe , i.e. death and disease came into the world. If Jesus' death on the cross corrected this why is there still death and disease.

I don't think you can really class a tornado as 'evil'. It's not a conscious being that chooses to kill and destroy ...

Now I get it.
Adam and Eve disobeyed god.
So god kills young children to get even with us humans.
