If you have some time in your busy day you might be interested in reading about the Bethany Home. As a child I was friends with a number of children who had been adopted from this institution.

It is helpful to remember that abuse is non sectarian.

I don't think, Withnail, that anyone thinks for one moment it ever was. The issue that gets the anger really going is when such abuses are systematically covered up.

Quite. There's a bit of a difference in how its dealt with, though. After Saville, a full inquiry was launched, investigations, fresh discoveries being made almost every week.

On the other hand, the UN and Interpol are after the Catholic Church's for refusal to play by the rules and show them their records, and so far....nada.

Christ - what a horror story!

Indeed, bearman, this is about as unpleasant as it gets. Did you note the deaths from merasmus

"Marasmus is a form of severe malnutrition characterized by energy deficiency. A child with marasmus looks emaciated. Body weight is reduced to less than 60% of the normal (expected) body weight for the age. Marasmus occurrence increases prior to age 1, whereas kwashiorkor occurrence increases after 18 months. It can be distinguished from kwashiorkor in that kwashiorkor is protein deficiency with adequate energy intake whereas marasmus is inadequate energy intake in all forms, including protein. Protein wasting in kwashiorkor may lead to edema. The prognosis is better than it is for kwashiorkor but half of severely malnourished children die due to unavailability of adequate treatment."

Basically these children (babies) were being starved to death.

All it takes is one fanatic.

What they were doing was horrific, but for me, the most chilling thing was the attitude of the authorities/inspectors who saw what was happening and brushed it aside.

Also notice theof death by scalding, and that they were so unconcerned they couldn't even be bothered to get a correct figure for the amount of deaths.

Or systematically denied, or the level of abuse played down, as Tom does.
