A brief description, and the right answer means you get to pose the next one. Who am I? -

I hail from Romford, Essex; I'm a minor rock star, but a major session name; I played in Ian Gillan's band; I look like Gilbert O'Sullivan (post-Chaplin era); and I played guitar on the Magpie TV theme. I am ... .......

Hi Leftin. It's not you, is it,?!

Leftin says:
Hi S.C. Sadly not! This gent was born in the '40s, and I... wasn't. :-) Clue - he wasn't in Gillan.

Must be Ray Fenwick then.

Canadian-born singer/guitarist who featured with three seminal West Coast bands followed by short solo career. Left first band before recording. Died 1999.

Spot on. Well done. Haven't a clue, though, sorry!

Gordon Dent says:
Sounds like Joe Walsh, apart from the died in 1999 bit.

In reply to an earlier post on 4 Feb 2010 22:08:46 GMT

Gordon Dent says:
Oh, and apart from the Canadian bit. In fact, it sounds nothing at all like Joe Walsh. Who said it was Joe Walsh? Idiot!

Is it Skip Spence? (Quicksilver Messenger Service [no albums], Jefferson Airplane [one album, as drummer], Moby Grape [one and a half albums], solo [one album])

Sorry for my tardiness, Gordon - you've got it.

ps - the negative vote is nowt to do with me!

In reply to an earlier post on 5 Feb 2010 10:25:10 GMT
Gordon Dent says:
Perhaps somebody gave me a negative vote for calling me an idiot.

London-born singer/songwriter, who also plays guitar and piano. He had two stints with a band not renowned for its up-beat, carefree songs, in parallel with a solo career along fairly similar lines. He has also composed ballets and an opera.

Sparky says:
Don't know but he makes me sick! bl@@dy show-off.

Leftin says:
Gordon - I know Gerry Rafferty is Scottish, but could he have been born in London? Baker Street, after all, is in London. And he was in Stealer's Wheel twice.

Posted on 5 Feb 2010 15:55:15 GMT
Gordon Dent says:
Leftin - Gerry Rafferty was born in Paisley. As far as I'm aware, he hasn't composed an opera.

The person I'm looking for was a Jesuit chorister in his youth, and evidently has an interest in the works of Edgar Allan Poe.

Sparky says:
Nick Cave - total guess

Gordon Dent says:
Sparky - No, Nick Cave is Australian, although he now lives in Brighton.

Sorry, I've just realized my clues weren't fully up to date. He has now had three stints with the band: 1968-72, 1975-78 and 2007-?

Leftin says:
Ah. Could he be Alan Parsons, Gordon?

Gordon Dent says:
No, not Alan Parsons, although Alan Parsons was born in London six and a half weeks after the person I'm looking for. The Edgar Allan Poe work I was alluding to is one story in the volume after which the Alan Parsons Project's first album was named.

Peter Hammill :)

I think I lost track after about album number 40...

Posted on 6 Feb 2010 09:55:22 GMT
Gordon Dent says:
Peter - Yes, it is Peter Hammill. Well done.

Posted on 6 Feb 2010 12:02:58 GMT
Nadgers - I was going to guess Hamill but I always thought he was born in Bath.

Can we have a question please, Mr. K?

In reply to an earlier post on 6 Feb 2010 15:54:33 GMT
Gordon Dent says:
SCH - PH was born in Ealing, so at least it was west London. He went to a Jesuit boarding school in Berkshire, so he seemed to be migrating towards Bath but I don't think he got there, unless he recorded at Real World Studios later in life.

Posted on 6 Feb 2010 18:57:29 GMT
Leftin says:
Peter Hammill definitely lives near Bath now, by the way, as does Mike Giles. Prog Country. :-)

Peter K. hasn't set a new question, so could I be presumptuous? Ok:

Her real name is Alison, and she's a part-Asian Londoner. She named herself after a comic character - nearly. Although she had some (male) help, she made it on her own terms in the early '90s. Her hit singles are too well-known to use as clues, but Hangover was a minor hit, and a very good number. Who is she? (And what's she doing now? I don't know.)

Betty Boo.

Just doin' the do.
