I've got a list of about 10 songs that I reckon are highly likely to be nominated and I'm awarding myself a glass of wine for every one I've got right. So far I'm one glass in credit:-)

Aww poor Rig. I think you should at least give him a treat if your entire list get nominated Derek :-)

Wiki appear to have forgotten this one but this version was banned by Radio 1. Matt had to edit it before Some Bizarre could put it out as a single.

That Wiki article actually makes interesting reading. I hadn't previously known of the BBC's 'exclusion of sickening sentimentality' policy that was implemented in 1942. Just think, had that remained in place well beyond WWII, most of Chris De Burgh's output would never have seen the light of day, which would have been the public service broadcaster's greatest ever public service for sure.

I am puzzled as to why some of those on the list would have been deemed unsuitable for broadcast and I'm sure I'm not the only one. I'm sure the depth of knowledge that exists here on the zon must extend to reasons for particular songs being banned and I think it would be good if folk could share their recollections during the course of this thread. Doesn't have to be about the songs nominated. Any such trivia will be read with interest by me at least.

Some of the reasoning was clearly just plain daft. I mean fancy banning poor old Billy Ocean on Gulf War sensitivity grounds. Who made that call FFS!

Banned during working hours in WWII for being "too catchy" if you can believe that. Apparently it was feared workers would join in the handclaps and neglect their tasks!

In trying to nominate Aussie content I googled "songs banned in Australia" and discovered that in the last two days, some radio stations have banned all KISS songs because of Gene Simmons' outburst on suicide ("Simmons made it known that he couldn't stand people suffering from mental health problems") - sensitive bloke! And that Cliff's "Millennium Prayer" was banned by some radio stations in Australia and Britain for being "too awful to play". But I went with Australia's unofficial national anthem which was apparently banned by some stations for referring to women whose "legs were often open".

Liq - I grew up in the extremely conservative colony of Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). I can remember the RBC banning songs such as Delilah by Tom Jones (violence), "Lady Madonna" - The Beatles (blasphemy), Ag Pleez Daddy - Jeremy Taylor (possibly because of the words "blerrie" (bloody?) or "moer" (beat up) - and, of course, the whole LP of Hair - Hashish/Sodomy/I'm Black and probably others.

I also remember my mum telling me that Vera Lynn's Room Five Hundred And Four was banned in the war years because there was nothing in the lyrics to say that the couple inhabiting said room were married.

Crikey, I thought some of the Irish broadcasting edicts were overly strict when I was a kid but that sounds horrendous Val. Must have been deeply frustrating for a keen music fan like yourself.
