Finally got around to having a look at the Sunday paper. Thought I'd sit in the sun with a coffee and catch up with what is going in the world. Sunday times a broadsheet had 11 pages about the Qutar scandal. Now fair enough it is a big deal but the first ELEVEN pages of a broadsheet!!!! That is many thousands of words to one story I frankly couldn't give a flying f@~& about before I get to stories that I might deem of interest. Must have been an extremely slow news week. Even the daily Comic doesn't devote that may words to the royal bores(granted they do do it every bleedin' day mind you)

Allegations of extensive corruption which, if proven, should warrant a criminal investigation into the activities of certain parties. I would say that's a highly important matter of public interest, regardless of how said public may feel about the business of football. I am no great advocate of the modern news media by any means, and granted 11 pages is somewhat excessive, but if they leave this issue alone and wrong doings remain unexposed, how much more will remain under wraps? Who knows how many other crooked schemes these people may be involved in outside of football, some of which could be impacting the lives of millions the world over.

T. Franklin says:
There are lots of flies buzzing around the FIFA dung heap, as there are with the International Olympics Committee and whoever runs Formula 1 now. So yeah, it's important to get to the bottom of things before the corruption of mega-$$$$ is irreversible (assuming that point has not yet passed, which is entirely possible)

RABB says:
Especially as these bidding processes and the hosting of the tournament itself involves a lot of public money which could probably be better used elsewhere. Especially in a place with such a massive class divide as Qatar.

What if (and I wouldn't be surprised) this meant that there was similar corruption involved in the Brazil 2014 bid? Big deal in the context of the massive protests that have taken place during the Confederations Cup last year and the run up to the World Cup in a couple weeks.

Definitely deserves an in-depth write-up, I'm guessing the 11 pages is more due to the English press's sour grapes over the whole World Cup bidding process.

Red Mosquito says:
I'm not sure that I could manage 11 pages of the Sunday Times on any topic even though I'm a big footy fan. The Qatar bid was a farce. Too hot to play there in the summer and the Premier League will resist a winter fixture because it will lose millions in revenue. Either way FIFA can expect a huge compensation claim. I think, if it goes ahead, the FA (England, if they qualify) and other nations might boycott it. It's a mess but it will be interesting to see how it's resolved.

No need to fill me in on the details now red, don't think the ST missed out anything no matter how insignificant :)

(not that I actually read more than a fraction approx. 1/10 by which time I felt I had more than enough of the salient facts)

well its a good question - the beautiful game, what can you say - jumpers for goal posts ? an enduring image isn't it ? David Beckham, Wayne Rooney, Micky Rooney, John Wayne - the wild west, ring the wagons isn't it ? fastest milk man in the west, yes, isn't it ? but seriously at this level - can't count 'em out, dark horse - isn't it? goal-line technology, well - not like the old days - high speed camreas for goal posts ? its a good question isn't it.

It is VERY important! - In fact it is THE most important thing that EVER was!...EVER!

(Roo made me write this post - but I've got my fingers crossed behind my back where he can't see, so it doesn't count! ;o>)

Good to see ya around Peter.
The same thing'll happen that's always happened; FIFA will have an 'internal' investigation, make a scapegoat outta somebody, and it'll all be swept back under the carpet. Totally corrupt from top-to-bottom. I mean, when an organization ensures there's nobody to run against it's president when it comes around to the time to elect... how the hell have they gotten away with it for so long?
Money talks... and Septic Tw@tter's rolling in it!

I know nothing about football and am quite willing to accept bribes, so when Seff goes I will accept the post with a smile.
