Brass Neck says:
'Can someone give an exact definition of 'the Blues' please?' - no thank God which allows for a rich diversity of music to be (mis)labelled as blues, most of which I love.

"'Can someone give an exact definition of 'the Blues' please?' - no thank God" I knew someone when I was at school who really could he seemed so obsessed by the idea of what is "the blues" that it seemed he was more interested in that than the actual music.

I studied cannon at music college. My 1812 has to be heard to be believed. Great instrument once you've learned the associated nuances within its amplitudinal attitudes.

Does it matter which balls you use, Mondo?

Hi Derek, I sent it on 2nd Jan at 8.24pm!
Have re-sent now. I've sent several more since then which have got through OK, so don't know what happened.

Can anyone give an exact definition of any genre of music, please - or music itself even.

In reply to an earlier post on 5 Jan 2014 19:24:37 GMT
Different styles and sounds of a certain period of noise - which may or may not be rhythmic or melodic? ;o>

Red Mosquito says:
Wiki has an interesting definition of music. I read it and thought about it a long time ago. I agree with it, as a definition. Some may not agree with it as it comprises of opinion. I now hold the view that there is only 2 types of music. Music that I like and music that I don't like. I don't agree with the view that there is good music and bad music or even anti music.

For those who wish to further their knowledge of the subject -

How Music Works by David Byrne is a superb outlining of music, the technology behind making it, the forms and the emotional responses to sound that give music the power it does.

The Rest is Noise: Listening to the Twentieth Century by Alex Ross, a superb overview of developments in music across the 20th Century.

Lez Lee says:
I agree about Alex Ross, perhaps the best book on music I've ever read.

Also D. J. Levitin - This is Your Brain on Music: Understanding a Human Obsession is very good but not as relevant to this thread.

Sparky says:
Been thinking myself - a mixture of noise interspersed with no noise, though both components are not necessarily present (to accommodate Mr. Cage), which one or more people may listen to, though I don't suppose this is entirely necessary either.
..........Nah! too specific innit?

In reply to an earlier post on 5 Jan 2014 22:55:32 GMT
That would be his track called "Williams Mix" described to a tee, Sparky ;-)

Yes, I was trying to remember Daniels book, Lez, it is superb. Very relevant I would have thought!

Lez Lee says:
Yes, I just thought it's not quite as descriptive of genres, but it is a while since I read it ;-)

Aaron Copland - What to Listen For in Music is also a great introduction but mostly classical.

Nugent Dirt says:
HNY CD. BTW i am not one of the 'no' button pushers. The 'there is only good music and bad music' statement is wrong. There is also the 'indifferent' or 'mediocre'which probably accounts for most music. Anyway surely a musician is someone who makes music even if they're just using a wobble board and kazoo. Someone who plays a hurdy gurdy etc is an 'instrumentalist'. Just a bit of random pedantry to welcome MF into the new year :0)

As for the Blues...huge mega yawn here esp the stuff made by the likes of Clapton, SR Vaughan, Bonamassa etc. Not much into the music of old blind dudes from the Delta either. To my ears one Blues song is like any other.

Nuge, I've always considered you better than a no pusher :-)

well they are scottish and rangers supporters, everyone knows Celtic are the best up that way :P

Interesting?...I Googled 'blues fans' out of idle curiosity and discovered that it pulled up several links to thesis research done by S. Stack on 'blues fans and suicide acceptability'...

I often get a bit depressed when watching Man United play - but generally I usually enjoy watching Man City? ;o>

as a utd supporter i would agree that watching us this year is depressing, and seeing city win only furthers my misery :(
