"pull down" the top of your screen . you will find options including "brightness"
you can then adjust

Help. I was given a small kindle about 6inches for Xmas and there doesn't seem to be any way to make the screen brighter. There doesn't seem to be any menu which offers this as an option, or button to push either, can anyone help? It's not much good to me as it is as I have to have a bright light to be able to read it. Surely I must be missing something as I can't believe a product designed for reading makes it almost impossible.

Shrek, it sounds as if you have an e-ink Kindle and the screens are a little grey. Superb in the sun and in bright conditions but at this time of year you need to provide some extra light indoors.

The screens (in all e-ink devices from all manufacturers are the same) apart from those models with built in lighting or a lighted cover can't be adjusted for brightness.

Denis Powell says:
You can't. You need paper books for that.

Thanks for letting me know Denis although I'm not happy with the answer. Living in Australia at this time of year where we are sweltering through 40 degrees (100 plus) we certainly don't go outdoors to read, and it isn't bright enough under regular light for me so I guess I will just have to stick with the iPad which looses battery life fairly quickly. Thanks anyway. Shrek
