My nearest bookshop (I don't count W H Smith) is 160 miles away. All the bookshops in towns nearer closed in the late 1990's and the last within 50 miles closed in 2003. Long before the days of Kindle or any other ereader. In the 9 months I've owned a Kindle, I've spent more on books than in the last two years put together. Mostly on Indies and non mainstream titles. I couldn't buy these from booksellers as they're not there.

Maybe some should look closer to home and consider how much they relied upon outmoded sales attitudes and stock and then wondered why their sales were dropping. I'd happily support a bookshop if anyone wants to open up within 50 miles.

ETA :Anyway, it's a Daily Mail article so it can't be true.

That's very old news though?

Oracle says:
Although frequently over-used, I think the term 'Luddites' in this case is entirely appropriate.

If the book shops are going out of business, maybe it's because they aren't offering readers what they want?

Quote: " You see people walking around with Kindles and they are like robots in another world."

'Tis witchcraft I tell ye!

What are they going to do when people start arriving in horseless carriages and making light without fire?

Brian says:
I've not seen anyone walking about with a kindle

Oracle says:
Replace Kindles with paperbacks in that sentence and it still makes perfect sense. Isn't that supposed to be the effect a good book has on someone?

That one's a spoof, methinks.

I love my Kindle and it has it's place but if you have ever been to Hay on wye it is about books...old and new. I think everything has it's place and Kindle is up there but in this "Festival" spirit can't see the prob.

250.000 allegedly attended I wonder how many of them bought a book from the local book shops that day.

pixie says:
Quite a few I should imagine...mostly collectors.

Norm Deplume says:
I've never been to Hay-on-Wye and now I never will. The medium is far less important than the message. Reading a good book on a Kindle is still reading a good book; a leather-bound, numbered, signed hardback first edition of a bad book remains a bad book.

Brian says:
Ha! ha! I wonder if some will sneak their kindles in though?

Jean Bigou says:
@ Norm Deplume - Hay on Wye is a great literary event with a real buzz and some great talks and workshops, as well as lots of lovely bookshops. A great experience for adults and children. Don't deprive yourself of the pleasure...

Brian says:
Good point - don't suppose I'll ever go either , Norm - I don't even know where it is - although with pixie popping in there , it's somewhere in Somerset. Probably a nice place , and my kind of place too , because I love Somerset. I like your profile pic by the way - never used one of them.

Jean Bigou! What can I say...you've said it all! First edition that you want and love and can gloat over...enough said.

Brian says:
I would like it I think Jean , but it's a long drive from here.
