I have just ordered two Kindle Paperwhites but when they come I want one registered in my name and the other in my husband's.
However, I've ordered them on my account and they are both showing on my account as my kindles.
Will I be able to change this when they come or have I "messed up" - help!

Well you need to confirm what you want to happen:

1 - you want to SHARE your library so that you can both read the same book at the same time for no additional cost. Leave things exactly as they are.
All of your books will always be on your account and will usually go to YOUR kindle automatically. Husbands kindle will see all titles and he can chose to download the ones he wants.
HE can also order any books he likes and when he orders them from HIS kindle they will be delivered to HIS kindle. You will get to see the titles and you can chose to download them if you want.
**Note: The credit card linked to YOUR account will pay for ALL books. That will either be important to you or totally irrelevant.

2 - If you want a his and hers arrangement where you can not share books and what's his is his and what's yours is yours then you can DEREGISTER one of the kindles by going to YOUR ACCOUNT / MANAGE YOUR KINDLE and then clicking DEVICES. Click on a machine and select DE-REGISTER.
Then the machines arrive one will be linked to your account the other will be just sitting there like a limp llama waiting for you to acquire wifi and then register using his amazon account details.

Simple as that.

Only thing to point out is that it's a ONE SHOT DEAL - Amazon will not merge accounts together or split them later so spend a few moments and decide what you want and then live with it :)

Have fun.

You can de-register one of the kindles from your account and re-register it with your husbands account.

Yes. Simply deregister one and register it to your husband's account.

You could have chosen one as a gift, which would have arrived unregistered, at the point of purchase.

Just to add - if you intend to share your account then you need to be aware that there is a SYNCH feature that will offer to take a book to the furthest page read. This is great if you are using different machines - it's not so good if you are both reading the same book and every time you open it the device takes you to HIS furthest page read.
You may wish to turn the option off IF YOU ARE SHARING THE ACCOUNT:
Sync Your Books & Personal Documents Automatically
Enable Whispersync for Books, so you can switch between Kindle devices and reading apps. You can pick up reading where you left off and view the bookmarks, highlights, and notes that were created on another device.

Make sure that your Kindle devices and reading apps are registered to the same Amazon account. You cannot sync Kindle content across devices if they are registered to different Amazon accounts.

Note: Whispersync is enabled by default.

Visit Manage Your Content and Devices
Select the Settings tab.
Under Device Synchronisation (Whispersync Settings), make sure that Whispersync Device Synchronisation is ON (Or OFF if you want to turn it OFF)
To avoid syncing errors:

Keep your device connected to a wireless network to allow automatic syncing across your devices and reading apps. If you put your Kindle into sleep mode instead of turning it off, you will not disable the wireless connection.
Always connect to a wireless network and return to the Home screen on your device when you're finished reading.
To view your bookmarks, highlights, and notes on other devices, you also need to back up your annotations.

Thank you guys for your advice/explanations. I get it now and I will think about how we are going to use them before I go changing things as per Combat Wombats advice 😊
