This is definitely a question for the baby-boomers out there. Do you remember the above 'medicines' and having to eat tablespoonfuls of the stuff?

I can't imagine that it was only me that had this forced down me as a child, but perhaps I'm wrong. Marmite is a by-product of the brewing industry and combines yeast extract with vegetable extract. I used to work there in my summer holidays.

Oh, she did jelly and trifle and stuff. She was world-class at cake and pie baking. She just had this thing about 'keeping you regular' amongst other things.

Never had that problem ;-)

I should explain that they were two separate things. Virol was the nicer of the two. Both had to be consumed by the tablespoon though.

You are so right, Virol was the nicer of the two but I used to love the hard stuff, to my sisters amazement & disgust I used to remind Mum to give it us. My sister made me "pay " afterwards. Takes me back years. I used to call it cough wriggle oil, I couldnt even sniff it now though.

grandmother shoved malt extract down me daily and a spoonfull of a white fishermans liquid..
she also made her own rosehip syrup and i had a spoonfull of that daily..
and vicks rubbed on the chest

I loved my daily spoonful of Virol! :0)
I hated having to wear a liberty bodice with its stripes of bias binding and funny buttons on top of my vest.
I absolutely dreaded the dose of Syrup of Figs to keep me regular :-(
I also hated not being able to change into Summer dresses however hot it was, because we were told "Ne'er cast a clout till May is out." Apparently this meant the may blossom on the trees, but as children we were told that it meant the month of May therefore we were not allowed to stop wearing the liberty bodice and start wearing summer dresses until the month of June. I had to wear a vest all year round.
Shampoo was a powder in a sachet that had to be mixed with water in a cup and I had my hair washed once a week.
Those were the days!

"Cod Liver Oil with Malt" was a favourite of mine as a kid. I think you can still get it from the likes of Holland & Barrett. People seem to think it is like Marmite, but it is sweet, dark and treacly.

Don't remember ever taking Virol. I remember liking cod liver oil & malt. Great big desert spoonfull everey day. Like melted sticky toffee as I recall.
Also National Health orange juice. Lovely 'though I probably wouldn't think so now
