A new skin

I am so excited, I have just ordered 2 skins from gelaskin, 1 for me & the other for my dad for his birthday. I designed them myself using a digital scrapbook program so they will be totally unique. Mine has a picture of my little boy pretending to read his daddy's Game of Thrones book with mummy's kindle across the top. My dad's has a picture of himself holding my little boy with grandad's kindle across the top. Both of them are on a background that looks like a page from a book & I have typed "get lost in a good book" on 4 lines that get fainter each time. I can't wait for them to come, hopefully they will look as good as I imagine.

Has anyone else designed or thought about designing their own skin? I wonder if there could be a market for it, do the layout & email the image for people to then have it made.

Hi never thought about it, but it is a very good idea. Hope you and your dad like them when they arrive.
You never know you may get a few requests

Sounds like a great idea Rambambino :-) I have often used my own photos to get mousepads/mats made, especially when I've been on holiday and been unable to buy one with a representation of the place I'm visiting. I don't use them, just have a collection of about 60 now :-) I know, I know, I need to get a life :-) Hope your skins are as lovely as they sound :-)

I've seen skins referred to on Ebay. Forgive me for a very dim question, but what is a skin? Is it one of those clip-on cases that leaves the screen free like lots of teenagers have in lurid coloured plastic for their Blackberries and iphones? How protective is a skin?

It's just like a sticker really. It will protect your kindle from scratches but I still have a case to protect the screen & to make sure my kindle isn't banged about in my bag. A skin is just really another way to personalise your kindle.

Do you have a link to the digital scrapbook programme that you mention in your o.p?
Thanks

You can download the light version & some digikits for free (you need to become a member but that is free too.) I love it. I've just got the full version after using an older platform for a while & I use it for everything. I make my son's nursery pages with it when we go on days out & all the staff are amazed as they stand out so much from the other children's pages.

As long as you have a photo you can do anything you like.

I thought it would show me how it was done, but maybe I am not clever enough to work out how! Anyway, my daughter says she can do something along those lines for me if I wish, so 'm thinking about what I'd really like. Putting 'Kindle 4 skin' into Amazon's search box brings up a big selection of ready-made designs. My favourites are (1) a heavily-laden bookshelf, but it's a bit twee - somehow overly sentimental, and (2) a London sky-line wi5th Big Ben central, which I think I prefer, and is a lot cheaper.

Yeah looking at the prices it seems anti much for a sticker going to look bait more because I still want one lol

I've done it - ordered the London one, which is in the Spring Sale down to £4.

If you search kindle skin on you tube there are a few videos on how to apply them & you will get a better idea of what they are. I have just had an email to say that UPS have printed the delivery label so hopefully won't have long to wait. I will try & post some pictures of them on the kindles.

My London scene skin has just arrived. like it better on the back of my Kindle than on the front - makes the front a bit busy somehow, and detracts from the monochrome screensavers, which I LOVE. But it adds to the scratch protection of the Kindle overall, and it can barely be seen once it's in its leather cover (which begs the question did I really need it, I know, but I really WANTED it...)

I have bought Decalgirl skins through Amazon for my Kindles. I reallu like the way they make my Kindle look but the matt skins work better than the glossy ones.
I did get a custom skin for my mobile phone which came out really well.
I don't remember which company made mine, but Gelaskins, which is also sold through Amazon seems to make custom skins.

Just like to let everyone know, they have come & they look fab. Can't wait to put mine on & my dad will have to wait until his birthday. I got them from Gelaskins & would recommend them, even sent an email to say they have a 15% off sale until Sunday. I'll try & put a link on with photos later.
