I have got the original kindle 1st gen.
I am going to buy the paper white, if I give my old kindle to my son and re-register to his amazon account will the device keep my downloaded books on it?
I presume I can download from my account all my content to a new kindle.

Hand over your device to your son with the parental controls set at locked. He can then read all your books.

When he wants the device registered to his own account - You handle the device and unlock parental controls and deregister the device using your own Manage your Devices found via link on right hand side of your Manage my Kindle page.

Kindle is then disconnected from your Amazon account and your Bank card totally.

Your books MAY REMAIN for a while on the device.

As soon as your device is registered to his Amazon account - your books will disappear.

I would advise a good charge and a Factory reset before he registers to his own Amazon account. The device will be emptied and will be as a new device from the factory. He can then choose his own operating language ie. probably English United Kingdom and connect to WiFi and register to his own account.

In a similar vein, I bought a paperwhite for my wife. It came registered to me, my wife deregistered it to set up her own account. Result, all, 100s of books have vanished from my first gen device!!!

Brilliant, any ideas how I can retrieve the lost books?.

The books are bought by and stored within an Amazon account.
To access them, you just need to make sure you have a device, or a Kindle for XXX app, or the Kindle Cloud Reader registered to the account that has bought the books.

You can set up a new account for your Wife, but why bother? Why not have both devices registered to the same account? Especially if you already have 100's of books on that account.

And if you have a 1st generation Kindle, then you will need to ring Amazon in the US. The UK (and us customers in the UK) know nothing about the first gen devices. The first ones we know well are the 3rd generation Kindles, also known as the Kindle Keyboard.
