I can give you an opinion based my experience.

I've a kindle that cost £89. I've an android phone and now I have an iPad 3.

First the iPad. I read a wide range of programming, tech and neuroscience materials at times, most of which are brilliant on the iPad. It has a brilliant colour screen and basically answers the convenience need of Internet wherever for me. These aren't that cheap though you do not need then higher spec ones. I hammer hardware yet I bought the smallest, cheapest one. Unusual for me and it is perfect. The screen is the selling point but I'm a gadget guy and like having my computer anywhere I go.

Now the Kindle. Its sat next to me as I type on the iPad. It's a LOT lighter, cheaper and the print quality is very good on the eyes. No backlight but nor does a paper back!

I took it in a friends hot tub the other day, it's in a leather case and I felt safe to do so as I wished to read. Cheaper to replace if it did break it, but I assure you I took care. The devices quickly sync to the latest page so I flit from one to the other reading.

Battery time is about two weeks on the kindle and over a day continuous of the iPad.

I mention the iPad and kindle, avoiding other tablets as the print quality on these devices is beautiful. The only other screens I see as good belong to this years htc one phone and similar. No one else at time of writing that I've seen produce a tablet with such a good reading screen. 1280x800 is far grainier and you would do better by far for pure reading with the simple kindle. Dont be fooled by these clone cheap tablets out there, none of them are as nice to read on as the resolution isnt quite high enough.

It's also a touch more discreet and convenient. I find it pleasant to read on even after using the brilliant retina display on the iPad. And reading should be pleasant :)

Take your mobile and use it as a router. Most htc and other android phones can become a mobile hotspot giving you wireless access to the mobile network.

Setting, network, wifi hotspot is the usual menu route. It gives a password of something like 123456789a etc and a name/ssid. The kindle can accept this and you get your books from it.

Seeing as you've got an iPad 3 , Richard , how come you've not got an iPhone?

If you read my review of the iPad I mention a strong anti Apple bias that I had to look past to see the value of what has proven to be an excellent tool for the job.

It doesn't make me want all things Apple mind.
