I've tried to connect my Kindle to my PC, but nothing happens when I pluf it in via the USB. No 'dongs', nothing comes up in 'my computer', no message on the Kindle. Wifi works great, and this seems to be the only problem. I've tried a different cable and 2 laptops as well - nothing. Also rebooted my PC. Any ideas anyone?
Many thanks

I don't know the answer, contact CS?
Have you tried connecting via a different USB port. I find that works sometimes.
Hope you get sorted

BarryMaz says:
yep, try another port.

To be honest, mine didnt "bong" as I expected it to when I connected, but it did (eventually) show up on My Computer as an unnamed drive - look there?

@ Ceepot have you tried a hard reset with your Kindle? Hold the the slide button to the right for 15 seconds then release.

Mine just showed up as another device and there was an icon on the right hand side of the toolbar. I think there was also a pop up message saying it was connected. Have you tried looking for it in my computer - called computer in Windows 7 ?

Daft question, but is the cable connected properly at both ends and is the kindle switched on? The kindle screen should say USB drive mode, and display a picture of the end of the cable and instructions for ejecting if you want to read on the kindle while it charges. The light next to the on switch should also be on (orange for charging and green if it already has a full charge)

Thanks everyone for your replies.

After a comprehensive phone call with customer services, a new kindle is on its way to me and I should get it in the next couple of days. Then I send the old one back to them.

Things do go wrong, and the service I have received from Amazon has been excellent so far.

I have the same problem with my Kindle 3, but the `funny' thing is that it works on my Dell laptop, but not on my Dell desktop. I've tried updating the bios on the desktop machine but to no avail. I have tried all USBs (the desktop has several) and none of them pick up the kindle. It doesn't even go into charging mode. This is very frustrating as I need to connect it to my desktop rather than my laptop, but being as the connection type is usb, you'd think it would work anywhere.

Apart from that, I love it!

Hope you get yours sorted.

I was lucky I had no trouble connecting it to my computer, the trouble started when I tried to move books across onto it. I had to get my dad to have a go. Is it just me, or do others get the feeling that at times computers and such like can be like people and get tempremental?

ChrisJ says:
USB, like other devices and computers and phones and Kindles, can lock up.
What that means is the device is expecting something to happen, and until that happens it wont do anything else. The normal way to fix this is to turn the device off, leave it for 2 minutes or longer, disconnect battery if possible, then turn it back on again.

Doing this turn off / turn on on the computer should clear any USB port issues.
BUT not always: because computers are clever these days and want to set the system up ready for your use as quickly as possible, sometimes the machine will remember what it is doing, so that it can be in the same state (i.e locked up!) when it is turned back on again.
In that case, you will need to disable the USB ports (in Control Panel somewhere), then turn off / turn on. Then re-enable the ports.

Thanks Chris. As it happens I've already tried all that and still no joy. MY pc is quite old (about 6 years) and that's why I updated the bios. Don't think they (my pc and kindle) will ever work together. But thanks for taking the trouble if making your suggestion.

Mrs. Quill says:
So THAT'S why the It dept always say "have you tried turning it off and then turning it on again?".......

Not relevant to the discussion, or kindle for that matter but talking of usb ports made me want to share! My integrated web cam on my laptop won't work unless I have something plugged into a usb port. Doesn't matter what, can be a pen drive, or a mouse, or even the kindle.

Chookgate, my webcam doesn't work in every USB port, and my wifi adaptor only really likes working in one port.

Anyone who is having trouble with there pc not recognising there kindle! you will find that the usb connection plug from the kindle that connects to your pc does not fit into your pcs usb socket properly the rubber casing on the plug will not allow the plug to fit all the way into the pc usb port!! so use a sharp stanley knife and cut around the plug so the plug will click into your pc usb port!!! ..pes..

I think its a power problem. I have exactly the same problem on my Samsung phone. which uses the same connector as the Kindle. I've ordered a powered USB hub to see if that sorts it out.

It may be you were told to disable the device to use it whilst charging. In which case go to Settings, Control Panel, Add Hardware and follow instructions. If is says "This device is disabled (Code 22)" thats what you've done. To disable again use "Safely Remove Hardware" icon on taskbar.
