The Kindle is still brilliant but I can't believe there has been no significant upgrade since it first came out (other than tinkering with screen brightness). Specifically, there should be some basic library management facilities to (a) remind yourself what the book is about (b) mark the book as having been read and (c) record a personal score for future reference. What's the likelihood of Amazon introducing these facilities in the near future?

On the Touch, if you long touch the Title on the Home page you have a "Book Description" option. On the Paperwhite, with the book open, the Menu button has the "Book Description" option. If the book is X-Ray enabled you can access even more information.

You can can create a Collection for Read books or, if it's on the device, simply look at the line of dots underneath the title on the Home page. If they're all dark the book has been read.

Personally, if I don't enjoy a book or believe it's not worth reading again I simply delete it from my account altogether. If I think it's worth reading again, on my Paperwhite, I add it to a Read Again Collection and delete it from the Device. I would find little value in a star rating for my own purposes as a book is either worth reading again or it isn't. Some people create Collections for each Star value. That may work for you. You can also rate them on

I suppose I was thinking more in terms of a software upgrade for the older Kindle. However I accept that the Touch has most of what I was suggesting, although my account is shared by several family members so an individual device rating feature would still be useful.

Denis, many thanks for your very helpful and comprehensive reply, it's much appreciated. I shall look into the Touch.

It's a link to the .com site where all your Amazon ebook purchases will show (not Personal Documents). You get the cover picture, title, reading status (Read, Reading, Hope to Read and Stopped Reading), and a place to rate the book up to 5 stars. You sign in with your existing Amazon details. I've just tried the link and it's working fine on my Laptop, although it's always a little slow to load. You can filter the results by Read, Reading, Hope to Read and Stopped Reading. You can also remove books from the list without removing them from your account.
