Hi, i'm looking for a sci fi book that I read ages ago and can't remember author or title. I read the first book but it was a part of a series. The plot that I can remember is it focuses on a facility that is in the middle of nowhere and has only boys with possibly priests looking after them, and they train in fighting techniques, and I think they save a girl and three of them escape across the desert with her to this city. There's a princess that the main guy whose a bit of an anti hero has a relationship with, but I think she betrays him. One of the scenes I remember is that he has a fight with one of the high guards and fights dirty and throws sand in his face? Sorry this is all a bit random, but does anyone have any clues what book this might be?

Sounds a wee bit like Paul Hoffman's Left Hand of God?

Thank you, that's it, I'm very impressed you managed to work it out from my garbled memory of it! Cheers!

One of my students described the plot of the book to me a few days ago - I've never actually read it!
