I have just finished a new book by Micheal Jacobs: The Robber of memories which reminded me how good travel books can be. It is beautifully written and was inspired by a chance meeting with Gabriel Garcia Marquez who has dementia. Michael Jacobs undertakes an outward journey up the Magdalena river, beloved river of Marquez in parrallel with an inner journey wrestling with his mother's dementia.

Top 5 travel writers
William Dalrymple
Patrick leigh Fermor
Bruce Chatwin
Eric newby
Paul Theroux for his railway books

also The Snow Geese by William Fiennes: a fine book but a one off i think?

Do you mean fiction or not?

If not I'd suggest anything by Michel Peissel, if you can find any. (I haven't read them all, but liked the ones I did.) He wrote a lot about Himalayas, Tibet (etc.), but I really enjoyed this one too:

The lost world of Quintana Roo

(It isn't *this* edition I've read, of course, but it is this book. His first, if my memory is to be trusted)

Third-class Ticket (Travel Library) is a travel book I really enjoyed. Currently not in print, but you can get second hand copies really cheaply!
Arabian Sands (Travel Library) and The Marsh Arabs (Penguin Classics) are classics.

Not sure it exactly fits the bill for 'travel' - more like travelling 'up'. :) But worth a read, I think

Tiger Of The Snows: The Autobiography

Bill Bryson. Read Notes from A Small Country, with Theroux's The Kingdom by the Sea as a chaser, and marvel at how much, much better the former is.

Colin Thubron is good too.

Make sure you're not reading "Notes from A Small Country" on a crowded train. Bursting out in uncontrollable laughter can be quite embarrassing in front of strangers!
