Doubt: A Parable I watched the film version of this play recently. It may wonder if fiction writers had taken on the role of journalists and journalists had adopted the techniques of pulp writers.
Newspapers and the media report allegations of child abuse with such sensationalist finger-pointing zest, it has ruined the basic threads of society. If, for example, I (an adult male) saw a young child trying to cross a busy road I would prefer to let it get run over than to take its hand and guide it across.
On the story . . .
A progressive Catholic Priest is accused by a senior nun of sexually abusing an alter boy. The nun has no evidence but relentlessly pursues the issue. The consequences of the allegation will affect the futures of both the priest and the nun.
What impressed me about the story is spanner provided by the sub-plot. It challenged the audience with the question . . . "So what if the priest was abusing the child? In the greater scheme of things, does it really matter?"
I've tried to avoid spoilers. If you're in the UK the film version "Doubts" is available on iPlayer.
