American Ride He's the fourth biggest seller of any musical format in the USA yet he's virtually ignored over here in the UK!! I fear his first recent concerts over here will be his last unless he has more mainstream exposure...yet he was BRILLIANT!!

I had no idea he has played over here.

Thing is, his ego is so inflated it's probably best he is unheard of in the UK.

I think the reason a lot of Country is played on UK radio is they think it's "too depressing", despite evidence to the contrary. I think UK music is packed with depressing music (Travis, Coldplay, Radiohead etc) and yet Country is packed with so many bright, optimistic songs - like Toby's "My List". Also, UK audiences can't focus on a lyric: that's why so many hits over here only have three words or one line to a hook. Case in point: Greatest Day by Take That - "Stay close to me" - the line is sung no less than ten times in that one song, not to mention the half dozen "and the world comes alive". There's no story or reasoning in these songs.

This could refer to all Country artists, but concerning Toby Keith, if I was his management company, I wouldn't release the album American Ride as I thought it was weaker than his others. I'd put out White Trash With Money and That Don't Make Me a Bad Guy as a twofer, with "God Love Her" as a single. Problem is, like I've said, the listeners would have to listen ... and that is beyond their capabilities.

Got to agree. UK music is crap, and you just need to look at the charts, at the poor standard of performing and song writing. Most can't even play an instrument!

Perhaps an online petition, forwarded to the record companies and the likes of Sky might be a way forward? what do you reckon?

Not just Toby Keith - other country artists such as Sugarland, Brad Paisley, Gloriana, Luke Bryan, Jimmy Page.... (I'll stop there or we'll be here all day!) Just heard Ronan Keating's new song on the radio this morning and guess what he's plundered Nashville again. After his dire cover of Garth Brooks If tomorrow never comes he's ruined Stay by Sugarland. He seems to think no-one in this country will know these songs and realise what a poor job he makes of them!!! Wish we could get the record label to release the Sugarland version over here but doubt that will ever happen and even if it did doubt any of the radio stations would break out of their play list of 12 songs to bother playing it!! Got to agree the UK charts are dire!!

How do we get Toby Keith & other Country greats played on UK radio - preferrably outside of a "specialist" 1 hour show? Methinks the only way to do is to takeover all the big stations and play it ourselves, because they have hee haw interest in the music. Oh we've had a few "token" tracks this year (Taylor, Martina, Sugarland & Alison Krauss). I particularly love the Alison Krauss single they released from her latest 'Collection'. It's from 2001's New Favorite album - was somewhat miffed when I heard it on the radio late one night introduced as "her brand new single".....

Why on earth are you worried about Toby Keith being played on UK radio? You wanna hear him? Stick a CD on - that way you don't have to put up with the mindless drivel the DJ come up with!

And as for TK live - personally I thought he was distinctly average and seemed to be going out of his way to turn every song into a soft rock mess (think sub-Bon Jovi .... and we all know there's not much worse than flippin' Bon Jovi!!). I blame the lead guitarist mostly - so far up his own you-know-what I'm surprised he could play a note!! Marks out of 10? 10 for making the efoort to visit the UK, but only 2 for assuming we didn't want to hear country music!!

Dave says:
Like Mary said, Alison Kraus is played here (I'm guessing it's "Let Me Touch You For a While" which is her "new" single, although I haven't heard anything), but she's put in the "easy listening" catagory; kinda filling the void left by the late Eva Cassidy. But no UK radio is getting behind her bluegrass material (although I like Alison, I maintain that Rhonda Vincent is the best in bluegrass today). We've had a few cross-over hits, like Lonestar de-twanging "Amazed" for a pop audience, and Taylor Swift with "Love Story". But the best music is Traditional Country, and the only way for it to get attention over he is to dupe people into believing they're listening to pop. I don't really mind, myself - I just listen to CDs, not radio.

There are a few stations notably Phil Macks Country on Tv that shows videos from the USA and there is always Bob Harris Country on BBC2. Of course mainstream radio programmes will not promote country because of the Hee Haw label. How many times have we read or heard tv pundits refer to it as Country & Western? The two Toby Keith concerts were outstanding. What a stupid comment to make about his "Inflated ego" Enjoy his music.
