I looked up firestool, and it seems to be more or less what we called the grate.ours did have an iron grid which could be lowered onto the coals, to boil the kettle on ( a bit like a Yorkshire range would have, only on a smaller and more modern version. That oven was brilliant.bread never tasted so good.only thing wrong was we never had enough coal to keep it going all the time.
I remember those box seats, Patti, and the fire irons. I also remember toasting pikeletss over the fire and using a brass toasting fork. The pikelets used to drip butter all over my chin, ...bliss. My only problem with that memory is ..where did the butter come from...was it butter...if not ..what was it. The ration was so small, I don't know how we had enough to spread on pikelets. Oh welll I guess I'll never know now.
