I hate it when people put 'like...on speed' or 'like...on acid' or whatever as a description of something. It seems so lazy.

To Tom and Helen

I am the author of the above mentioned book. A friend of mine who has read my book posted the comment above as he is doing some marketing for me and thought he would post the books back cover comment as well as the description in an amazon discussion section. I was a little alarmed to log on and find accusations of shameless self promotion.

I was even more surprised to find that Helen above had responded by "reporting" spam and several minutes later leaving a comment on my book (which she had obviously not read) and given in one star. I feel this is a more than little dishonest. Helen please reconsider your comments on my work which are unfounded.

Tom I will be posting in the meet the authors section soon, I have no desire to self promote in the improper manner. This is a genuine post, and not by me.

WOW. it really is ruthless out there.

Insight: The OP was an advert, not a disinterested recommendation by a member of the public.
Insight: 'I feel this is a more than little dishonest...'
Insight: 'WOW. it really is ruthless out there...'

Is getting your mates to write reviews 'honest'? Is pretending they're not your mates 'honest'?

Surely if it is marketing it IS a promo?

tempting!

EDIT: is it possible anyone can have been dumb enough to read this post and not realise it was sarcastic?

She's got a point though. Reporting spam is one thing; posting a troll review in spite is going a little too far.

Maybe she read the free sample. I did.

And anyone who visits the page can do the same. It doesn't entitle her to write a review - that *is* dishonest.

Dan Fante says:
I think people are just sick of the self-promotion stuff. There's barely a thread in any of the reading forums on here without someone plugging a book. Usually dishonestly. And there's already a specific forum for that. I thought Helen's review was better than the opening chapter of the book as well ;-)

I'm sick of it too, but 2 wrongs don't make a right. This is someone's life work, terrible though it may be - we're within our rights to object to spam but we shouldn't trash the book itself without having read it. And if people are interested enough to read the first chapter, I guess the spam has done its job. Personally, the OP was enough to put me off going anywhere near it.

Fair enough. Like I said though, I suspect the other reviews aren't 100% genuine either.

I suspect you may be right. :)
