Need help finding a book i read years ago as a kid?
It was a memoir or biography about a man who single handedly lived in a underground bunker , hut? manning the weather station in the north pole ? He had to take the temperature night and day by scrapping the ice off of the gage and the only way to keep warm was by keeping the boiler alight knowing that it was leaking carbon monoxide . It was such a long time ago that i read this book but i seem to remember he was there for about 6 months and that he had a separate room for his food
and fuel. Also he used to describe how he used to have to ready himself mentally to get out of his warm sleeping bag every morning to do the job he was there to do. I hope someone can help me as i want to read it as an adult with a different perspective
Oh i think he was x army or navy and it was in the 1930s??
Thanks in advance
jan

Please help me find abook . It was about an Irish woman who lived in Perry Barr, Birmingham. it was written by herself and I believe her name was Margaret. It was about her life and family during the 50's and her visits back to Ireland, and a husband that left her quite often

janaminna, didn't follow the goodreads link, but assume this is Alone by Richard Byrd. To me the book was all the more interesting because there have been doubts cast on Byrd's version of the carbon monoxide poisoning. (I really hope that makes it more interesting for you as well rather than dampening your enthusiasm--sorry if the latter's the case, as it's a great read.)

Not at all Monica! We will always have doubters but seeing as Byrd was the only one there and his brain was filled with a certain amount of carbon monoxide then i will read it again and enjoy it like i did all those years ago for what it was .... an adventure in another mans shoes!
