I have posted this in the music group - but looking at most discussion I have doubts there will be answers - so I will try here where there is a Biographical aspect to my request(s).

Hello all,

This may not be the best place for this request - but lets see...

I would like some ideas for beginners books on Classical and early music. I have listened to Classical and early music for decades but I realize that while enjoying to it I have lacked full (or any) understanding of it. The type of book (more likely books) I want is something that outlines the sytle(s) of the music and singing and how each developed over time. For some reason I love listening to music by Thomas Tallis and other similar composers and earlier.

Also what I would love is a book(s) that described what the musical piece "means" - I caught the last part BBC 3's program "understanding Music" today - it was the end section on the 6th concerto of Bach's Brandenburg Concertos. I have listened to this Concerto before and enjoyed it - but Richard Egarr's commentary made the concerto come alive as never before. To say it was an eye opener for me does not come close to how I felt. Yes I am a "newbie" in this way but this taste has made me hungry to repeat this experience many more times - why I was not familiar with this program I cannot say - what I can say is I now am aware.

I hope you can help. Even if your suggestions are not for the beginner that is fine - I hope to soon not be simply a bigenner but a beginner that has begun on a new exciting journey.

Thanks for reading all the above.
