My top five in order:

1) Get Carter (Budd 1971)
2) Scorpio Rising (Various 1964)
3) Mean Streets (Various 1973)
4) The Wicker Man (Giovanni and Magnet 1973)
5) Assault on Precint 13 (Carpenter 1978)
6) Bugsy Malone (Cast 1976)
7) Vertigo (Herrmann 1958)

If the OP can have seven (Godfathers 1-3) I figure I can too.

'Solaris' by Cliff Martinez
'The Thin Red Line' by Hans Zimmer.
Both wonderful soundtracks. 'The Rachel Papers' (various) was great also, but never released.
Actually, 'The Piano' was really good as well.

1 - The Empire strikes back - truly the best ST of all 6 SW films and just awesome in general
2 - Jaws - music made the movie
3 - Raiders of the Lost Ark - phenomenal soundtrack, instantly recognisable
4 - The Good the Bad and the Ugly - Masterful
5 - The godfather trilogy - atmosphere

3 of them are from Johnny Williams, best composer in Film history

I ahve not mentioned some of his other classics such as ET, HP, SW, SM etc

1. The Empire Strikes Back-John Williams (Best film score period!)
2. Conan the Barbarian-Basil Poledouris (Most underated film soundtrack ever!)
3. Superman-John Williams (Can't get that theme song out of my head)
4. The Return of the King-Howard Shore (Beyond epic)
5. The Omen-Jerry Goldsmith (most evil score I've ever heard)
6. Last of the Mohicans-Tevor Jones/Randy Edelman (makes me run around in buckskins while scalping people)
7. Legend-Director's Cut-Jerry Goldsmith (largely ignored masterpiece)
8. The Phantom of the Opera-Andre Lloyd Weber (Beyond genuis)
9. The Hunchback of Notre Dame (Disney)-Alan Menken (Puts the music in most live action movies to shame)
10. Queen of the Damned (music makes the movie)

BTW, it's interesting to note that most of the film scores on my list and the other posters were produced before 2000. Makes you wonder what that says about today's film scores?

Cartimand says:
Witchfinder General and Blood on Satan's claw both had beautifully evocative and very English themes (with perhaps a hint of Greensleeves about them).

The Wicker Man had some truly memorable songs.

But Deathstalker II's theme, composed by Chuck Cirino, is probably my favourite movie theme - it makes a great ringtone too!

I guess to each his own. Just don't really consider "The Exorcist" a memorable film score other than the theme song "Tubular Bells." Now The Omen. There's a soundtrack you can't forget. "Ave Satani" forever! ;)

Best movie soundtrack ever is the 1986 Transformers: the movie animated film soundtrack. A CD full of classy but cheesy hard rock.

The star wars and james bond films always had outstanding music, from the iconic theme tunes right through to each films score.

I love the original karate kid soundtrack aswell, top cd however missing a couple if good tunes it does include 'your the best'.

The rocky films all have great music with my Rocky 4 the best one.

Christopher youngs score for the first 3 hellraiser films are excellent.

Ghostbusters, back to the future and scarface all have excellent soundtracks.

Flash Gordon and the highlander too.
