gille liath says:
Sounds like it ought to be a pretty one-sided fight...

Does also have a bit of an 'Abbott & Costello Meet the Wolfman While On the Way to Play Pool With Frankenstein' sound to it.

A superman vs batman fight could happen.

Anyone who says diffetent obviously has never read the comics.

The quote Snyder used at comic con to announce the collaboration was taken straight from the frank miller story 'the dark knight returns'. This is primarily a story about a slightly ageing batman who has been retired from active service for several years and is in his early 50's. Gotham has degenerated into a sess pool with a new and large gang of street punks terrorising the city. Most of batmans old enemies have also aged and are either semi retired themselves or shadows of their former selves. It's a great story with batman questioning his role during his years of service and contemplating whether or not he's made things worse and what would Gotham be like if batman had never existed.

Batman decides to don the cape once more and get back out into the streets to try and once more clean things up. At first he does well but once the street thugs band together under a ruthless leader they become too much for batman to handle and he's defeated in a great fight with the leader. He retreats to recoup and re think and once more goes out to fight the thugs only this time with a lot more viciousness than before.

Batman has always been a vigilante that doesn't mind dishing out some rough justice but now with renewed vigour he doesn't hold back as much and pretty much rips the thugs a new one and only stops short of actually killing people. This starts a huge war for control of Gotham which doesn't go un noticed by the rest of America, particularly the president.

In a bid to try and stem the un rest in Gotham the president asks superman to intervene. Clark and Bruce have been friends for years but have always been against the way each other chooses to be a hero. Bruce thinks Clark is too naive and too much of a by rules Boy Scout and Clark thinks Bruce has too much darkness and rage in him. After an initial conversation in the bat cave where Clark asks Bruce to calm down and let him help save Gotham things go a bit sour. Bruce tells Clark to do one and stop interfering. This mostly comes from pride as batman is fully aware superman could achieve more than he could with his powers but damn it, this is batmans town.

After Bruce refuses to stop Clark basically tells him he'll be forced to stop him.

Batman then constructs a new suit, armour made with lead and enlists the help of Oliver queen, the green arrow. During a huge battle where batman is kicking ten shades out of a bunch of street thugs superman shows up and stops batman. When the thugs run off superman faces batman and easily wins a small fist fight. Not really a fight as superman throws a couple punches and batman is sent flying and crumples to the floor. Clark tells Bruce he's holding back and not using his full power, just doing enough to stop him. Unbeknown to superman the green arrow is perched on top of a near building and fires a kryptonite tipped arrow at superman than strikes him. Bruce was careful to ensure that their wasn't enought kryptonite to kill or seriously injur Clark, just enough to weaken him. With batmans new suit offering him greater protection he is able to have a more even fight physically. This is where batman wins as he's more intelligent and far better trained in fighting so he over comes superman.

That's the general gist and by the end of the story they are friends but its one of the greatest comic book stories ever and I've only touched the surface with my description above. Coupled with some fantastic artwork and it really is a masterpiece.

As a comic fan I'd love to see that on screen. There was a two part animated feature released very recently covering this story and it was awesome. You can buy it on amazon on two DVDs or two blu rays as pt. 1 and pt. 2.

The possibilities for a superman and batman film are endless. What about the graphic novel public enemies. Another awesome story (and another that's been turned into an animated film). This is where lex Luther has managed to fool the public and using his vast wealth with lexcor has managed to become the president of the US. His first action is to try and pass laws to control the various super heroes and villains and bring them in order. He convinces several heroes and villains to join him in his promise to bring peace and prosperity to the planet. He seems to be talking sense but superman knows him and suspects he's up to no good.

Lex asks to meet superman to talk and sets him up by using metallo to attack him. Metallo is a cyborg who after being defeated by superman long ago managed to find a way to replace his uranium power cells with kryptonite power cells. After a huge fight metallo lays dead and lex announces to the world that superman is a killer and must be brought to justice.

This galvanises the worlds heroes and villains into action who attempt to bring superman into custody. Only batman is shrewd enough to believe that superman was set up and didn't kill metallo (metallo was assassinated during the fight with superman by someone else).

The story then sees batman join superman on the run from various other super beings whilst trying to prove supermans innocence and expose lex's true plans. As has been mentioned before on this thread superman is weak against magic and several DC characters have powers derived from magic so they can stand up to the son of jor-el.

A superb story that would make an awesome film and would make a perfect sequel to man of steel as its primarily a superman story with batman in a major but supporting role and could introduce lex.

I could go on longer and list all the times batman and superman gave either teamed up or had to against each other in the comics and it works well. No reason why it couldn't work on film with the right people behind the camera.

Ok Wayne but this likely wont be The Dark Knight rises, as was said do we have several issues

1. That was one of the inspirations for TDKR movie

2. That's a Batman story, Superman is barely in it and gas clearly lost his way, Bats is the (good guy)

3. That's an old grizzled Batman, this has to also be a reboot as they've said this will not be Nolans batman ( pity as that would work great actually IMO)

4. It's going to have to spend time Introducing Bats and this is supposed to developing the Superman character

5. It's out competing directly with both Avengers 2 and Star Wars7.

6. They are then planning on jumping straight to Justice League with no more standalone Supes/ Bats movies

How does this seem like good decision making by WB?

It sounds like they are chasing the success of Avengers

As I've said if it was Nolans batman then I'd be very excited about this, but it's not.

Now would this not have made more sense

Batman reboot
Bats Vs Supes
Wonder Woman
Justice League

I.e the well planned out non rushed Marvel model. They want Avengers every movie, Marvel realise they can maker more money and creat better worlds doing it their way.

I hope I'm wrong because a flop will result in death of both Characters again for a while and we don't want that.

But let's not forget over the years superman has bad 6 films and batman has had 7 films. Then you've got the tv series stuff like 60's batman and smallville and the new adventures of superman.

Basically over the last 3 decades we've seen plenty of these characters on screen so we don't need another batman reboot film and whilst another man of steel film would be good I can totally understand the decision here.

Yes ok so we could have aquaman, flash (which we are getting) and Wonder Woman films and one or two other standalone films and I do think this would be a good thing but we aren't so no use wasting any more time going over the fors against on the Internet. It is what it is.

I'm sure anyone against the idea will still go to see a joint batman and superman film so WB will still get your money and still make a fortune.

LOL Aquaman .. for years I thought he was something made up for that brilliant "Entourage" show

Yeah Id probably go and see it to be honest, you never know it could be good.

But More likely to wait for reviews on this one as already I'll be seeing both star Wars and Avengers with my son, so I dont go to Cinema all that much.

If reviews are positive and I fancy it I will go to Cinema, if not I might wait for the Blu Ray, but no doubt I will watch it and decide for myself.

I ahve a friend who has a very simlar viewpoint to you on this Wayne, and its really all a matter of opinion, with a big pinch of "we dont really know anything"

I forgot about Flash and thought it was Aquaman they were doing, Doh!

I recently got to watch the new Justice League Cartoon movie, Flashpoint Paradox

I never watched it all thoguh as I sat down to watch my my son and relaised very quickly it was going to be too adult and unsuitable for him, basically when Wonder Woman cut off Aquaman's wife's head it was time to turn it off.

I will watch it on my own soon though as it seemed interesting

The Butt of a thousand jokes in The Big Bang Theory also LOL.

But if you look at the main members of JLA its

Bats, supes, Flash, WW and AM, I dont think there is a huge amount of interest in WW or Aquaman, but then everyone thought Marvel were Crazy for making a Thor movie and that he could not work in a MOvie, they were wrong, so you never know.

Posted on 25 Jul 2013, 13:04:27 BST
Don't forget green lantern, green arrow and the Martian manhunter are all pretty much nailed on regulars of the JLA. Like the avengers theirs been a few other characters that have had brief spells in the league.

Never understood the hate for green lantern, thought it was a pretty decent film to be honest. Maybe people just don't like the actual character I don't know but I thought it captured the character and the world of the green lanterns quite well. Ryan Reynolds was pretty good and would have been ideal in the JLA film. His comedic presence would have been like RD Jr's iron main is in the avengers.

As for aquaman I think he's a cool character. Super strength, power of flight, can command all living sea creatures and live underwater without ever needing to surface for air but is also a formidable opponent on land.

Yeah I wonder if they'd consider Reynolds for the JLA movie?

If they got the right actress to do it I imagine there'd be a great deal of interest in Wonder Woman. A mate and I had a discussion about this a few years ago and we couldn't think of the right actress to play her though.

Even now I'm at a loss for who'd be suitable.

Posted on 25 Jul 2013, 15:16:23 BST
I think this could work.

I predict that we will see the new Batman introduced whilst Superman is dealing with problems of his own. Perhaps he is struggling to deal with the incident that happened at the end of the first film. Something happens between the two as I'm assuming that both of them are righteous and so there needs to be a good reason to pit them against each other. I think it will be a small fight but that the rivalry will carry on throughout the film until that fight.

Cue new enemy where both join forces and realize that they both fight for the same cause. I'm not expecting to see a punch up for an hour and if we are, it surely can't be with Batman that has strengths like the ones we have seen in recent films.

In reply to an earlier post on 25 Jul 2013, 15:16:26 BST
Yeah wonder who'd be best.

Needs to be someone not glamorous, but fit and feisty, even a bit muscley but not enough to seem unattractive?

I vote for you Ryan.....

But in all honesty I can't think off the top of my head, what about Sigourney Weaver, smoking tabs and croaking?

Megan Fox LOL

The Girl who plays Robin from How I met you Mother, and she is also Maria Hill in Avengers

But she'd need to train up?

Olivia Wilde, she has the classic beauty needed for WW

Jessica Biel seems to be the favourite for the role though.

Sigourney Weaver's too old.

Could thoroughly support an Olivia Wilde or Jessica Biel Wonder Woman film.

There is a comic con in the uk but its crap compared to the one in the US. I went last year and it had poor guests and too much manga for my liking. Plus it had way to many nerds lol. Met a guy in the queue that was dressed in a home made costume of cloud from final fantasy and he talked like kripke from the Big Bang theory! Gave me and my mates a chuckle :)

Comic con is basically a huge nerd convention. It has a huge market place to buy comics, graphic novels, toys collectibles etc plus it usually has guests to chat too. The uk one usually has comic writers/artists and low level tv stars from sci fi and fantasy shows. If you get a Star Trek actor at the uk one its usually some guy who was the cannon fodder for an away mission in one episode lol.

The us comic con is a major deal as you'll get top stars and directors turn up and usually any big announcements regarding films and tv shows will be made there.

Both have sections re video games too.

I'd love to go to the US one in San Diego.

One good thing about the uk one is I managed to buy and official replica of batmans batarang from the arkham asylum game complete with stand and official plaque. It's actually a pretty tasty weapon so if anyone breaks in they'll get bataranged up ha ha

My cousin went to the UK ComicCon this year and it looked like a good laugh, although I think the only guest she met was Warwick Davies.

Wouldn't mind going next year though, bet there's loads of eye candy at the very least. Might help kick-start me getting into actual comics too.
