Federal Protection stars Armand Assante as a car thief for the Mob but is run down by the FBI and then put into the Witness Protection Programme. His new, young neighbour spots his old photo on the news and she decides to get to know him better. Soon, her cheating husband and his sister conspire to sell Howard Ackers (Assante) out to the Mob for $1,000,000.
British director Andrew Hickox comes up with quite a few neat set pieces, usually invoving demolition of some sort and these are great, exciting and filmed from interesting angles. Elsewhere, it's as if he's trying to be "knowing" in making everything seem like The Sopranos, so everything has an attitude, verve, a swagger, especially Assante. It all bundles along nicely enough, with a soundtrack that's at least interesting, even if some of the story isn't.
Acting is, at best OK and generally, not too embarrassing. What is embarrassing, though, is the drawn out suitcase-full-of-money exchange, that's both ridiculous and painful to watch.
Another downside is that it's in 4:3 ratio, which for today's widescreen TV's looks small and very TVM like. Amazon's info panel state the DVD is in this ratio, too.
All in all, it's OK; the Sopranos it ain't and if it comes up on TV again and this is your sort of movie, then go for it.
