This frase from W.H. Auden's "Doggerel by a Senior Citizen" came into my mind when I read this novel by Guillaume Apollinaire. It is always difficult to write pornography: you can't focus long on anything, really. And this is what makes this book so boring.
Guillaume Apollinaire wrote two pornographic novels: "Les onze mille verges" in 1907 and "Les Exploits d'un jeune don Juan" in 1911, though it was published with some other title back in 1907. The first book was always considered an important work of Apollinaire, but this book had to wait untill 1977 when the first critical edition was published. In 1993, the title was added to the third part of Apollinaire's collected prose.
Academically accepted though, I still think this is a boring novel. The protagonist simply has sex with all other figures in the story, just like that. It's hardly erotic (bloodscenes and women that smell like eggs) and it doesn't contain a plot at all. Be wise, and don't buy it". The only reason it is famous, is because Apollinaire wrote it. But you simply can't compare the writer of this book with the great poet and storyteller.
