I bought this item over 7 years ago. It just popped up on my Amazon page ??!!??!! Nonetheless, was a lovely product worked really well against my creative 5.1 speaker system.

this product is very good, and it really provides solid audio performance,, but each time I restart, it will come to default settings and sometimes, the remote hangs for a while,,,
I think am still playing around with settings,,but its really a very good external card,,and perfomance wise,,this thing is a real beauty

I bought it because I used to hear noises coming from the pc with the onboard sound (like buzzing and stuff).
It came in one of those really annoying plastic packages that's sealed around the edges that you need huge scissors to open. Once out of the box, the unit is small and light. The cables are seperate from the main unit.
I set it up as per the instructions - it took ages because the the english language is cut in half, for some reason. Basically, you plug it into a USB port and you're ready.
I was told by the manual to install the software so I did. Afterwards, I noticed a huge jump in sound quality. After tweaking the equalizer and other settings it sounded amazon, even with my budget speakers; clear and distortion-free.
Only problem is, although you don't need to install the software to get the card to make noise, you do need it for basically every function, even the ability to use the headphone port.
I had some problems getting this to work with Linux, but most users will be OK.

Best USB sound card around
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 12 May 2008
This is an absolutely wonderful bit of kit. I haven't had any problems with it since I got it 4 years ago, and I've been recommending it to plenty of friends, who have also all told me how happy they are with it.

You will find that you must install the official supplied driver for the soundcard when using it in Windows. It will work without, but it would appear the generic windows driver limits the USB bandwidth, meaning reduced quality or number of channels. For instance, you may not be able to record at the same time as playing back. This might explain some of the problems mentioned in other reviews... You also don't get as much control. (You only get a couple of volume sliders, instead of the whole set.)

The card works fine in Linux and MacOS X, but you certainly don't get as much control as you do in Windows. Your mileage may vary.

As my laptop is famous for a poor sound card and I use it to listen to music via a hifi system I decided to upgrade.

This is a good upgrade. Stereo image, bass and musicality has improved considerably. It sounds sweet and more than listenable. Compared to a CD player the treble is a bit soft even with the equaliser tweaked but that seems to be the case with all but the XIFI sound cards which have a 24 bit crystalliser. This doesn't and due to limited USB bandwidth it won't run 96 KHZ : 24bit either. Only 96@16 or 48@24.

The creative media centre is fabulous. Using the remote, can control your music from a distance thanks to large screen interface, change the volume, and even set it up to control your DVDs in power DVD. Simply brilliant.

If you need to transport laptop about, disconnect and on board sound card will activate automatically. Plug it back in and this will take over. Works seamlessly.
Its not as good as a XIFI but for considerably less its a great upgrade.

Plug and play 5.1 usb sound card, up and running within 10 minutes! Great software to accompany a great piece of kit. Superb value for money. If you want to practice some home dj-ing I would recommend Virtual DJ software as this can support two sound cards so you can monitor with headphones from another sound card because when you plug your headphones into the Sound Blaster it cuts out the main sound. Awesome!

As mentioned above, my PC came with onboard sound, and music sounded awful, even though I have Creative itrigue L3450 2.1 Speakers.
I could never get my microphone to work either, which was frustrating. This is great for someone like me who's too scared to open up their PC.
My microphone works and sound is fantastic now!! I'm so glad I bought this :)
