Press Gang is one of the greatest ever children's TV series, with clever plots, snappy dialogue, interesting and well-developed characters, and great performances. As the commentary discusses, it was blessed with a calibre of cast and crew rarely available for a series shown at 4:45 PM.
The second series begins with traditional plots based around the newsroom and its characters. The newsteam works overnight to rewrite an entire issue when their lead story is scuppered; Colin schemes to set up a chess championship and Lynda tries to recall what she forgot to finish 10 years ago. The tone becomes more serious, albeit still with a healthy dose of fun, when the characters and their relationships come more into focus. Recently-dumped Kenny finally snaps and forces Lynda and Spike to go on their first date, Colin tries to help a young girl who is being abused by her father, Sarah wants to resign and Kenny becomes a rock star. Just as Lynda and Spike get together, a near-fatal accident has Spike thinking about their future. Can Lynda convince him not to return to America? And as they leave school, will the Junior Gazette be taken from them?
This series has a good bit of everything that makes the show great. Breakfast at Czar's sets the newsteam against the odds; Going Back To Jasper Street is a nice little mystery; Something Terrible deals well with the serious subject of child abuse; The Rest Of My Life has great emotional drama; and At Last A Dragon and Yesterday's News exemplify Spike & Lynda's love/hate relationship, with all its snappy comebacks.
The DVD itself is an improvement on the first series, and my only disappointment is that it left me wanting even more - and feeling that the first series DVD missed some opportunities. The commentaries, on four key episodes, are hugely entertaining as Steven Moffat (writer) recalls factoids, jokes and anecdotes whilst Julia Sawalha (Lynda) seems to remember mostly just the kissing scenes. The discussion ranges from acting styles and behind the scenes info to Steven's pyjama fetish and exploding pigeons, and touches on episodes across the entire show's run. It's such fun that it seems a shame more episodes didn't have commentary; perhaps future releases might feature more and get the additional insights of people like Sandra C. Hastie, Dexter Fletcher and Bob Spiers.
Also featured is an unaired 'making of' documentary. It's an early edit, poor quality video and full of timecodes, but a fascinating look behind the scenes nonetheless. A couple of trailers are also included, with a 'gag reel' (mostly the cast making silly faces, and one blooper). Rounding out the special features, you can stick the DVDs in a computer to view several interesting PDF documents including 3 original scripts, the original series treatment (outline of setting, characters, series 1 plot outlines and future direction), episode guides for the first two series, the first issue of fanzine "Breakfast at Czar's", a 1992 review, and 4 Junior Gazette mock-up covers from the show.
All in all, the show is great viewing and enough to justify getting this DVD on it's own. It's great to see the episodes again and all the features are a wonderful bonus - I am really looking forward to the later series releases, hopefully with even more extras (commentaries & extended cuts!).

Great Features

Whilst I would have bought the DVD even if it had contained no special features whatsoever (as was the case with the first series), I must say that the audio commentaries on four of the episodes by Steven Moffat and Julia Sawalha are some of the best I've ever come across. Also, what no reviewer seems to have mentioned so far are the numerous PDF files available if you slip the DVD into your PC - these include some of the original scripts, an episode guide, and, best of all, a Press Gang fanzine which contains a fascinating interview with the producer Sandra Hastie. All in all a great package for a great programme. Roll on series 3 to 5.

Pure brilliance !

Press Gang (Series 2) is perhaps the best piece of television you will ever see. Absolutely brilliant. This is not a kids programme despite appearances, it's a programme for anyone who has a love of brilliant writing, fascinating characters, humour, pathos and a classic love story. Unlike many kids programmes from this era, this DVD is not all about the irony factor, it stands up today just as well as it ever did and it's clear why this won critical acclaim and a BAFTA.
This series follows the Junior Gazette gang as they prepare to leave school, deal with life changing issues, question their course in life, face death, fall in love and grow up. All this plus some cracking one liners. What more could you want ? It's a big improvement from series 1 too, with everything coming together and the show really maturing.
The DVD is well put together and has some great extras. Scripts, a documentary and commentary from the writer and Julia Sawalha (Lynda Day) which is great fun.

Awesome!

It's unbelievable that Press Gang is out on DVD. The second series DVD is overall a better package than the first with commentaries on select episodes and a few other extras. Interestingly there are also two soundtracks - one seemingly the original mono and the other a stereo remix (or original stereo - the original sound would have been stereo than broadcast mono on telly.) Cannot tell on my system whether the stereo is surround encoded though. Seems to differ episode to episode which sounds better. I also noticed less compression artefacts than on the first series DVD which is surprising since there is more content on these DVDS! Anyway, Press Gang is out on DVD. No more needs to be said except bring on the next three series!

Memories are made of this

I cannot begin to say how delighted I am that Press Gang has finally been released. It was a programme which pretty much defined my years growing up...I have pretty much all ther episodes taped onto various well worn videos - but this is a real treat. Press Gang was wonderful for so many reasons - it was funny and serious and all the things I still look for in a programme, film or book today - the programme is nice to watch and remember fondly (I was scared that the rose tinited glasses would have made it into something better than it actually was) - but it is still as sharp as it was 15 years ago.
Never just a children's programme - it did not patronise or dodge awkward or serious issues. TV today could learn a lot. I learnt a lot from the characters, and the situations. After this series there was three more (with far fewer episodes in each) and I hope that these too are brought to DVD sooner rather than later. I hope that Press Gang will delight people like me who have watched the episodes many times, but also win a new army of fans.

It's like a dream

I can't believe after all these years, "Press Gang" has finally been released on DVD... with extras!
The extras are generally fantastic - wonderful commentaries by the creator, Steven Moffat, and Julia Sawalha (Lynda Day) on selected episodes. The rough-cut documentary on "The Making of..." was fascinating too. Slightly disappointing gag reel (obviously the cast were too professional for bloopers), but overall, this DVD is more than I ever could have hoped for.
Let's hope sales are so good that they have to release the final three series straight away (with even more extras!).
