Product Description
A collection of short films which explain the story of the 'Matrix' universe.
Amazon.co.uk Review
The Animatrix is a series of nine stories by different directors set in the Matrix universe, all of them conceived and commissioned by the Wachowski brothers. They demonstrate an eclectic mix of anime animation styles, stories and characters, most of which intertwine with the narrative of the first sequel, The Matrix Reloaded.
The first and most impressive is the Final Flight of the Osiris (from the director of Final Fantasy). In a breathtaking computer-generated short that would have worked well as a pre-title sequence for the second film, the crew of the ill-fated Osiris discover the sentinel army and the machines drilling towards Zion. This most filmic of the offerings guides fans into the more individualistic animated styles of the subsequent features.
The second and third instalments, The Second Renaissance, Parts 1 & 2, turn the tables on the man vs. machines battle by telling the story of the emergence of artificial intelligence and the ensuing (mostly human instigated) carnage leading up to the subjugation of the human race. The remaining features are: Kid's Story (directed by anime supreme Shinichiro Watanabe), which introduces us to the Kid, who also features in Reloaded; Program and World Record, written by Yoshiaki Kawajiri, better known for schlock horror anime Vampire Hunter B; Beyond, which tells what happens when ordinary people discover bugs in the system; A Detective Story, a homage to film noir as PI Ash is hired to track Trinity; and the distinctly psychedelic Matriculated.
The standard of animation is high throughout, even where the storylines are confused (and in one or two cases little more than conceptual). This is a fascinating collection of shorts that will appeal to Matrix and anime fans alike, as well as shedding light on some of the more obtuse plot machinations of Reloaded.
On the DVD: The Animatrix is primarily a visual offering, so it's good to see that this anamorphically enhanced 2.35:1 video transfer is near-perfect, with CGI extravaganza signature short The Final Flight of the Osiris being about as stunning as is possible on a small screen. Extras are plentiful: the commentaries for The Second Renaissance Parts 1 & 2 are in Japanese with English subtitles; there are two more commentaries, for Program and World Record. There are also some features, including one on the history of anime and seven on the individual films in the series; the best of the latter is the featurette for Osiris, which goes into detail on the CGI and contains a "square celebrity death match" sequence of a modified Aki (from the Final Fantasy film) battling a sentinel. --Kristen Bowditch

The first, "Second Renaissance: Part One" gives a fascinating incite into how the machines started to break away from their human masters. "Part Two" which I have not seen yet, gives the story behind the war between man and the machine and the construction of the Matrix.
"Program" looks at a story set within a training simulation, it deals with honour, deceit, love and war and is guaranteed to keep you on the edge of your seat right up until the finale, I won't give away the ending but it's one to watch out for.
"A Detective Story" is set around a detective being given the case of hunting down computer hacker 'Trinity' (whom you may remember from The Matrix Trilogy). Featuring cameos from both Trinity (voiced by Carrie-Ann Moss from the movies) and a number of agents, this anime "film noir" gives an interesting incite to the Matrix from a completely different point of view.
These short animations (each being at about 10 minutes in length) give a fascinating incite into the world of the Matrix, shedding light on the movies and the characters within them, as well as giving us the chance to look at the story from a different perspective. Brilliant.
For someone who is'nt really familiar with anime or the Matrrix universe (I've only seen the first movie once), I found these shorts to be great self-contained stories, with some stunning animation and aesthetics.
The two-parter 'The Second Renaissance' is an evocative and disturbing prequel, of sorts, to the movie trilogy. The opening episode portrays the machines in an almost sympathetic light as they are subject to discrimination and slavery - one shocking scene depicts the brutal gang-murder of a female robot; a jarring and disturbing scene. Part I closes with the machines peacefully seeking to establish their own nation. The second segment of this story depicts the opening of the war with the machine nation, wryly named Zero-One, the 'scorching of the sky' and their radicalisation against humanity. Indeed, even as the machines rise to dominate Earth, they see the creation of the Matrix as a last chance at salvation for mankind; to enter into a symbiotic relationship between man and machine and establish a permanent peace of sorts.
'Program' is a great vignette in the style of the Neo/Morpheus training programme from the first movie. Two human rebels duel as they debate the merits of life in the Matrix and the 'real world'. The choreography and staging of these duels is stunning, combining the balletic martial arts from Crouching Tiger with the more kinetic and surreal physics of the Matrix movies.
'Detective Story' is set within the Matrix itself - the noirish style underlines how mature and flexible a medium anime can be for storytelling. Indeed, this segment includes one of the key characters, Trinity, from the movies.
As a whole, Animatrix is a real testament to the extent to which diverse artistic voices and creative talent can keep a franchise fresh.
The various US, Korean and Japanese talents behind these shorts have interpreted the Wachowski's universe and created stories with unique visual and narrative styles - extending and enhancing the original story-world with new perspectives and aesthetic sensibility.
I cannot imagine George Lucas allowing other filmmakers to interpret and reinvent Star Wars. The Lucasfilm and Star Trek people could learn a little from Animatrix and understand how their tired, homogenised sci-fi vehicles could be reborn, if new artists and talents are encouraged to play in their story-worlds without being beholden to a 'story-bible'.
Indeed, this is a great analogy of big-media versus the indie artist...and allowing fair-use of copyrighted material to create new works and explore a medium...but hey, that's *another* story...
...it'll be interesting to see how the coming series of Star Wars shorts - 'The Clone Wars' - will fare against the amazing creative quality and narrative depth of Animatrix.
The chapters do of course cover missing plot holes in the matrix trilogy but for the most part it stands out. The first taken right from the movie concept then more and more things change. Even to the point you are watching a couple of samurai lovers try to break away from there controlled reality and wind up fighting each other. Tributes to artists from Ghost in the Shell, Aeon Flux and Cowboy Beebop it goes on and on each story generating a different emotion. Honestly I love this just for the sheer amount of detail and effort. To all those who love anime get this it is worth holding onto and you will find yourself pointing out little tributes throughout.
This mainly goes for The Second Renaissance I and II. Which is sometimes extremely gruesome, but has an important story to tell. It also has some fantastic abract imagery that won't soon leave you.
Another gem is "Beyond", which has much less story, and no action, but which is even more beautiful in all its understatedness. If you like good drawings, I beg you to notice this masterpiece. It is probably the single most beautifully drawn piece of animation I have ever seen. Not the least the *composition* of the frames is amazing.
The concepts of the Matrix (what is reality? and are we prisoners?) are important to think about our situation in this world, and when they are represented as beautifully as here, they are a pleasure to consider also.

The "Second Renaissance" storyline of the battle against the machines is unforgettable.
That alone justifies the purchase.
