THE BOOK is divided into four chapters of unequal length: A. Cosmogony (14 pages); B. The Gods (116 pages); C. Religious Customs (12 pages) and D. The Heroes (106 pages). Each chapter is subdivided into titled sections varying in length from a single paragraph to several pages (1). The book is easy to browse and does not have to be read sequentially. The illustrations are mostly of relief sculptures, statues and painted pottery from museums in Greece and around Europe. The front cover shows Theseus fighting the Minotaur from a black-figure amphora, sixth century BC in the Louvre. This can also be seen on page 149 and the complete amphora can be seen on page 177.
