- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 16 November 2015A very comprehensive guide to creating a resilient lifestyle. Dr Mars has spent many years studying permaculture techniques in a very practical way. His book is not about theory – which is seamlessly introduced as you read – but a description of how things work when you actually do them.
From creating a soil profile to building solar heating systems, he provides useful detail about the basic skills required, aided by informative sketches. These are not only relevant to the small holder aiming for self sufficiency, but presented for the benefit of urban lifestyles too.
Western Australia, where the book is set, enjoys a warmer and drier climate than the British Isles. I found the occasional contrast in core outlook fascinating. This book is a must-read for anyone from the UK planning to engage with food growing further south – project workers, volunteers, buyers etc.
For anyone, this is the most approachable book about permaculture I've ever encountered. Buy it for your hippy niece, but also for your gardening friends. It's a jolly good read and an excellent present!

I was excited about getting a look at this book, but I'll pass it along to some one else or donate it pretty quickly. The book lists plants good for various conditions, eg "tolerates drought" which is good to know, but neglects to mention what temperature range the plants can survive in. This is a pretty important information bit. Knowing about plants and what a person needs to know about them, I am able to see the gap and the importance of the gap. This makes me unwilling to rely on this book as a resource, because, in an area where I lack knowledge, I won't be able to know whether it's lacking, so I'll need to research everything, and wasn't that what the book was supposed to cover for me?
There might be some good ideas in there, but in my opinion, it went to press too soon. It is perhaps a good draft of a future very good book, but not yet.

This book is really good, cause in about 200 pages it gives you interesting advices regarding permaculture practices to use in your everyday life. It gives you important infos to minimize your negative impact on the environment.
MauricioReviewed in the United States on 15 June 20162.0 out of 5 stars Too basic
Hard to permaculture a life with this info. Too basic, wide scope without many details on the how to. Most of the book is about basic useful plants info. But again too basic, say vitamins, and some soil and weather requirements. Sorry Ross, I wouldn't recommend this book as an addition to a permaculture library
