- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 January 2011This mammoth, glossy book is the record of a significant retrospective exhibition in Glasgow in 1996, and is published by Glasgow Museum. It is in the modern tradition of such catalogues, with a large and authoritative body of text as well as a wealth of illustrations, making it the definitive work.
The pictures are distributed through the body of the text (in correct catalogue order) rather than grouped together. The text thus traces the themes of the original exhibition with the illustrations close to the relevant sections of interpretation, making the book enjoyable to read and easy to follow.
We have as much in-depth study of the artist and the many aspects of his work as anyone could ask for. Three essays set "Mackingtosh in context". Four examine the "Architecture". Another three survey "Art and Design", including Mackintosh's later paintings, which are too little known. A final 30-page "Conclusion" looks at Mackintosh's influence since his death, and the fluctuating fortunes of his reputation and popularity.
This book will be a valuable resource for architects, interior designers and artists. Wendy Kaplan is the editor; other contributors include Juliet Kinchin, Daniel Robbins, Janice Helland, David Walker, Mark Girouard, John McKean, Gavin Stamp, Pat Kirkham, Alan Crawford and Pamela Robertson

I love this book. Just having it on my shelf or coffee table is beautiful but it’s so comprehensive.

Most of us depend on the work of researchers to provide understanding into the lives of people like Mackintosh. I'm more than happy with this book. Informative and personal at the same time. Like a non fiction love story. I'm content with my selection.

The book was more beat up than I'd like but for $6.00 I shouldn't expect too much. I'm satisfied with the purchase but just remember when buying used books, they have been used.
