A Puzzle wrapped within a pictorial enigma

About 30 years ago, this book was a publishing phenomenon. The glorious and slightly haunting colour pictures by Kit Williams each concealed a hare. But this was not the real puzzle - there were clues in the pictures that led to the discovery of a golden hare whose whereabouts only the author and Bamber Gascoyne knew. After about a year, a book with the answers was produced but just before its publication the hare was located. Unfortunately, although at least two people had worked the location out fairly, before they retrieved it the hare was discovered in a somewhat dubious fashion which can be raed about on the internet. This strange and unsatisfactory ending does not prevent any enjoyment of the book - read the rather sparse text, try to work out the clues concealed in the pictures but, above all, luxuriate in the magnificent paintings in this book. I enjoy them as much now as I did then - I'm sure the book would sell fairly well now if it was ever reissued. No other treasure-type book has ever come close to reproducing the magic & mystery of this magnificent tome.

i was bored with my ps2, dvd films, etc etc when my partner sugested i read a book. me read a book no chance. so i thought what the hell, and she gave me a big old book, the masquerade, my god did i get into this sitting up trying to work out the puzzels etc, but then i went on the internet thingy only to find that the treasure had been found, i was not a happy bunny, no pun intended. im lucky my partner had the hard back copy, even though there is no treasure, i will keep on reading it.
