On a par with Frederick Forsyth
4 Stars
On a par with Frederick Forsyth
I've been an admirer of Frederick Forsyth's books for many years. For some reason, I never read any of Robert Harris' works. Last year, by chance, I found Enigma. That was a revelation, combining the detail and research of FF with a strong narrative and excellent story telling.Archangel is my second of Harris' novels and it keeps that tradition, but is more story and less detail-driven. The research is there, however, in the history and locations of this story, set in Russia. It deals with the people around Stalin and his legacy, and it made me curious to read more about Stalin. Novels can help us take an interest in things history did not teach us at school, or which we managed to forget or ignore.I didn't find Archangel as compelling as Enigma, but it kept me reading every day, and its a very good novel. To me, saying Harris is as good as Forsythe is as high a compliment as I can pay him, because both men plough some similar territory as far as I can tell. I think the next best compliment I can pay him is to say that I have already bought several more of his books. If you like intelligent, fact-based history and current affairs wrapped around your fiction, and it is a powerful mix, then these books are ideal. Just two novels doesn't qualify me for my Robert Harris' fan club badge but I think I want one.
