Conrad’s Fate: Book 6 (The Chrestomanci Series) Hardcover – 7 Mar. 2005
A splendid, new, magical adventure from Diana Wynne Jones, set in the worlds of Chrestomanci!
Conrad is young, good at heart, and yet is apparently suffering from the effects of such bad karma that there is nothing in his future but terrible things. Unless he can alter his circumstances – well, to be brutally honest, he is DOOMED.
Conrad is sent in disguise to Stallery Mansion, to infiltrate the magical fortress that has power over the whole town of Stallchester, and to discover the identity of the person who is affecting his Fate so badly. He has to put an end to them, or he wont last the year. But can any plan really be that simple and straightforward? Of course it can't! And things start to go very strangely for Conrad from the moment he meets the boy called Christopher…
This is trademark DWJ – packed with laugh-aloud humour, insane logic, spot-on observations, organised chaos, and all wrapped up in a rattling good adventure which oozes magic from every seam. Literally.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 September 2017Another Chrestomanci book, after all these years! Originally read the series 16 odd years ago and loved it. So happy to have found another addition to the series. Wynne Jones's stories draw you in, and anyone who's been a child/teenager can relate to her characters.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 5 March 2016The second modern fantasy adventure in the Chrestomanci series for teenagers! A gripping novel!

excellent characters and plot , already own previous 5 , still to read book 7
Still debating to get the other series in book / kindle format
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 24 November 2006On the whole I enjoyed this book but was disappointed as I felt it wasn't as well written as the older novels (eg. Charmed Life and The Lives of Christopher Chant.) The speech of Christopher did tend to rate on me throughout the book but it's still a must read for any fan of DWJ.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 August 2010One of my favourite books of the Chrestomanci series - well written and interesting and a good story through and through.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 6 October 2009Conrad's Fate is another wonderfully intriguing instalment from the
Diana Wynne Jones Chrestomanci Series. We recommend it for both children & adults.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 March 2005Conrad's Fate is certainly worth a few quid of anyone's money. It's not quite as good as my previous favourite Diana Wynne Jones book "Changeover" but there is still plenty here to recommend. As always Ms Wynne Jones paints a wonderful picture of Stallchester and the Stallery Mansion and transports the reader into the very heart of the story. The pace never lets up and I was left guessing right to the end which is always a good thing in my opinion. Books like this more than make up for the wait in between Harry Potter books.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 12 May 2012This books is classic Diana Wynne Jones, and reminds me of why she was my favourite author as a child - and is still up there with the greats in my opinion now I'm an adult. Wynne Jones has that wonderful ability to make you care passionately about her characters within just a few pages. You're hooked from the very beginning, and this is a particularly page-turning story. I really enjoyed the descriptions of life as a servant in a big, traditional house, and the stuffiness of the establishment makes for many very funny moments. It's a lively, sparkling narrative, full of intrigue and action, and never dull. The protagonist, Conrad, is an instantly likable character, whilst the supercilious Christopher is just the right mixture of flaws and virtues. There's a host of fascinating and often amusing supporting characters as well.
Overall, it's a lighthearted story that is suitable for younger readers, but there are some real emotional undercurrents as well. Conrad's disinterested mother and his betrayal by those who are supposed to care for him echo similar themes in 'The Life of Christopher Chant' and 'Charmed Life'. There are also some subtle moments of irony that will be better appreciated by older readers. One is the scene where the butler excuses the bad behaviour of the heir and heirness of the manor due to their 'extreme youth' (twenties), all in the hearing of the much younger footmen (12 and 15) who are expected to work 18 hours a day and stand so still they are part of the furniture. Things do tie up neatly in the end, but I like that too about Wynne Jones' books - maybe it's not lifelike, but at least you don't get left frustrated by loose ends.
Whilst this book is part of the 'Chrestomanci series', it can be enjoyed without having read any of the others. The series is non-chronological anyway, so although this is the sixth to be published, the events are actually chronologically second. If you had a choice to read any of them first, then 'Lives of Christopher Chant' proceeds this one, and I suppose you could say there are some mild spoilers for that tale in this one.
I would highly recommend this, both as a children's book, and for adults who enjoy fantasy. Diana Wynne Jones' books are not the new Harry Potter. They preceeded Harry Potter by thirty years, and are in my opinion much much better. But if you enjoyed HP, you will almost certainly also like these.

MegReviewed in Canada on 26 September 20095.0 out of 5 stars Funniest Chrestomanci Book
There is no need to have read any other book in the Chrestomanci series to enjoy this as each book can be read seperately.
In my opinion, this is the funniest book in the series. Christopher Chant as a teenager is something you don't want to miss, he's quite as weirdly adorable (and insufferable) as Howl from "Howl's Moving Castle" (another better-known book from the same author).

MinervaReviewed in Canada on 15 July 20163.0 out of 5 stars Great Read for Children
This is another book in the Chrestomanci series that doesn't quite capture the fun of the first few books but still manages to hold the reader's interest and provide a great experience to the readers. I would still recommend this to young readers as the entire series is a good read.
