- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 24 September 2014The only author I have come across with the capacity to addict young readers to reading overnight!
My 13 year old niece, after I had handed a chrestomanci book to her when she was bored, said " why did no one tell me about this writer before? Think of all the books I could have read years ago!"
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 August 2015Well received gift.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 August 2010The Chrestomanci books are a great series of books that have yet to reach the big screen. Still an excellent read for all ages because they are so well done.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 November 2000slightly disappointing as most short stories are, there is not much to get your teeth into as the stories end just as they get going. Having said that if you like the Chrestomanci series then buy this just to find out more about some of the lesser characters. Don't expect earth shattering plots!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 February 2019This is a collection of four short stories that are set to be contemporaneous with the events of the first few books in the series (based on the order that my omnibus edition is sequenced, “Mixed Magics” is the fourth book). Like the title suggests, the tales are quite varied in tone and style. For instance, the first one, “Warlock at the Wheel”, seems pitched for younger readers, with slapstick humour provided mainly by a bumbling good-for-nothing crooked warlock. He hijacks a car, while on the run from robbing a bank, and finds himself saddled with a young child and her giant pet dog instead.
The second story “Stealer of Souls” picks up from the second book, “The Magicians of Caprona”, and finds little Italian Tonino Montana coming to Chrestomanci’s castle, and meeting a hostile Cat Chant. This story has more sinister elements involving the capturing of souls of the Chrestomancis by a powerful and evil enchanter and the boys in mortal danger, and involves some time travelling into an earlier era.
“Carol Oneir’s Hundredth Dream” feature elements of the novel “The Lives of Christopher Chant”, which was the last book I read in this edition’s sequence. There is a delightful twist which I won’t give away that makes the whole idea of manufactured dreams come alive. Wynne Jones also satirises the marketing of toys and products pitched at children, which mirrors the way our consumer culture has taken hold on us from a very young age.
The last story, “The Sage of Theare”, is the one which is most unlike any from the series I have read, featuring a plot and setting more in line with the Greek mythical tales of gods and goddesses than one about magic and enchanters. But Wynne Jones melds the different worlds (literally) of her story universe together rather admirably when Chrestomanci appears. Unfortunately, it seemed to end rather abruptly, and I really hope to revisit this world in more detail in the two remaining books in this series. Keeping my fingers crossed.

En pleine lecture. Le livre a souffert mais toutes les pages sont là. Je suis en revanche très déçue de ne pas avoir la couverture de l'édition affichée et je me retrouve avec l'horrible couverture orange bêrk !
D. HallettReviewed in the United States on 4 November 20125.0 out of 5 stars I Love the Chrestomanci
I must admit that I am an adult, but I love the alternate reality world of magic in these books. Several worlds, magic and intrigue told from the point of view of a child makes the political and social statements go down pleasantly.
Many like to compare these books to Harry Potter. These are not the delightful Potter books. Instead, they stand alone as a wonderful look into a world that most of us would love to live in.
Great for adults and older kids.

celialoneReviewed in Japan on 19 February 20044.0 out of 5 stars
2つ目は、“Stealer of Souls”で、Charmed LifeのCat Chantと、CapronaのTonyが一緒に冒険する物語。“Carol Oneir's One Hundredth Dream”は夢と現実が交錯する独創的な物語。“Sage of Theare”は、預言は何があっても、たとえそれを成就すべき人物が存在しなくても成就される、よって逃れることはできない、という物語。Warlock以外はクレストマンシーはちゃんと登場してどんな問題も解決してくれます。どんどん彼の物語を書いていってもらいたいですね。
dictionaryfanReviewed in the United States on 16 February 20124.0 out of 5 stars Great Escape into Fantasy
Mixed Magics is a book of four short stories related to thee Chrestomanci series by Diana Wynne Jones. The stories take you back into the Twelve Related Worlds to visit with some of our favorite characters, including Chrestomanci, himself. I love the writing style and creativity in all of Diana Wynne Jones' books because when I'm done reading them I feel like I've just returned from a vacation in another world.
S. BarnumReviewed in the United States on 15 March 20165.0 out of 5 stars A must for Chrestomanci fans
This is a collection of short stories involving characters from Chrestomanci books. They fill in some gaps, and are pretty light. Highly recommended if you are a fan of the Chrestomanci books.
