Robinson's Mars trilogy--Red Mars, Green Mars and Blue Mars--was arguably the finest thing the SF field achieved during the 90s. Its account of the terraforming of Mars, revolts and repression and the creation of something approximating a Utopia has an impressive sweep but does not neglect the human dimension. The flawed but fascinating leaders of the original colony and their increasingly strange descendants interact and conspire down the decades; the discovery of longevity drugs at an early stage in the plot ensures that those characters who are not murdered, crushed, exploded or burned in warfare of the most inventively horrid kind just keep on going. The Martians is by way of a pendant--several of the longer stories fill in background to the trilogy by telling us about relationships that happened mostly offstage. Sometimes Robinson tells us what would have happened in other circumstances--in two stories the colony never starts. And much of the rest of the book consists of the epiphanic evocations of exotic landscape which is yet another of the trilogy's strengths. The Martians is not the place to start with Robinson's Mars trilogy, but it is a nice addition. --Roz Kaveney

    Thoroughly enjoyed the original trilogy of the Mars, (Red, Green, Blue Mars), and was happy with the prequel - fill in stories of the Mars 100. Apart from some of the political rhetoric, and constitutional rule explanations, which I reckon detracted from the story of the 100 and those that followed, The Martians was entertaining.

    If you are familiar with the Mars Trilogy, then this is a must-have: approximately 1/3 of the stories deal with an alternate reality within the storyline, where the 1st 100 never go to Mars. Another 1/3 cover the lives of a couple of natives from the late Red Mars to post Blue Mars timescale, giving a different perspective on the colonisation project. The last 1/3 covers miscellaneous stories, similar to the run-in stories within the chapters of the trilogy.

    If you have never red the Trilogy, then this is not really a good entry point: I would recommend that you read the Trilogy through first.

    This is what KSR is good at - presenting multiple possibilities of the future (see his Orange County series). In this book, he gives some alternate ways that the Mars trilogy could have panned out.
    Yes, when I read the first chapter for the first time, it was a bit confusing, but it really only took one chapter to get the hang of what he was doing.
    A good book - left me feeling "I'm glad things actually worked out the way they did" which is an odd way to think about a work of fiction...

Anyone intreasted in sf, literature or story telling in general must read these novels. [2] 'The Martians' is a collection of short stories; some beautiful, some merely intreasting, that willl inform, absorb and reward the reader of the trilogy.
    Read the Mars Trilogy [please! you won't regret it!] then read this book.
    Warning: You will not want it to end, nor say goodbye to Robinson's incredible characters.

    Quite scientific but gloriously page turning. Characters are really filled out and it is not sentimental with its heroes. One of my all time favourite trilogys although I was a bit disappointed with the end but this really was trifling. I would recommend these books to anyone (even those not usually interested in science fiction - although the science may leave some people cold). I'm about to read it for the 3rd time and am sure I will still find it fascinating.

    The Red, Green and Blue Mars trilogy has to be the definitive work on Mars colonization. This is not that! it's a 'companion' volume of short stories and novellas featuring the same characters and offering sometimes new revisions on some of the plots in the the trilogy. I confess, I bought this in error but have enjoyed it nevertheless. You must have read the original trilogy first though.

    There are some ok stories here, but nothing approaching the brilliance of the original trilogy. The real downside, however, is the inclusion of a over-long, tedious and just plain boring story about climbing a mountain. I'm sure some people find that sort of fiction wonderful, but it's not what a bought a science-fiction book for.

    These are a lot of short stories, essays and poems that give more information on what was happening and how they felt. The constitution was there and an explanation of how they would handle governance. They borrowed a lot from Australia. Most of it I enjoyed. Science was not my strength, so the essays on this ( though few) were beyond me. I thought this was a great series. I could imagine something like this happening. They looked at Earth and decided there were issues they did not want to deal with, one being guns. They also decided not to have countries, so everyone would work for the whole planet. This really appealed to me. I recommend this series, and if you have a science background, I think it will really appeal to you.
