I purchased this unit along with the Ring doorbell for £35 as a bundle on Prime Day which is a bargain. I won’t focus on the doorbell but the Show itself.
The Show comes with a power adapter and lead. The unit itself is finished in black (or charcoal according to the marketing). There’s microphone mute button, two volumes buttons and a slider control that can block the in-built camera on the front. The unit is quite chunky in that it has to accommodate a speaker. The screen is a 5 inches in diagonal length. You can buy an optional stand but it is perfectly stable in its own.
Setting up the Show took what seemed like ages. The updates took around 20 minutes. Once that was done, it was a fairly simple case of linking it to the Wifi. Most of the functionality within the Show 5 can be done from your Alexa app but if you really want it to customise it, go into the Show’s settings and this is where things get tricky. The screen is touch enabled but I struggled with it in navigating the menus. Once you get into the menus, there is a fair bit of customisation but it didn’t remember the ordering notifications which kept popping up. Maybe the touch screen tech needs to be improved in the next version?
The picture quality is serviceable but remember this is the cheapest Show unit. You’ll need to go up the range to get a better screen. The 2MP camera is what it is – functional. There’s no 1080p so if you’re expecting high quality, I’m sorry to disappoint you. You can display photos on the Show but there is a catch – you need to use Amazon’s Photos library so be carefully what you upload onto it. When connected to the Ring doorbell, it shows a pretty good picture but as I said once before, it doesn’t have 1080p so you can’t exploit the quality of the doorbell’s capabilities. The screen itself has an ambient sensor along with other settings so brightness can be automatically controlled.
The speaker sounds boomy and a tad muffled but considering the price, it’s acceptable. The microphone works surprisingly well. The Show picked up my voice from 10 feet away whilst I was talking. When I’ve spoken into it via the Ring doorbell, people have said they can hear me clearly.
Don’t get me wrong – I wasn’t expecting top notch picture or sound quality. To use an overused saying “It does what is says on the box” and being able to enact privacy controls on the actual unit is most welcome. I wouldn’t pay more than £35 for this unit (which it currently retails at).
