Product description
British singer-songwriter Katherine Priddy releases her much-anticipated sophomore album The Pendulum Swing via Cooking Vinyl. This follows her highly acclaimed 2021 debut The Eternal Rocks Beneath, which announced Priddy as a singular new talent on the contemporary roots music scene. The first single from the album is “First House On The Left”. Speaking about the single and the wider themes on the album Priddy commented: “Despite its soft and dreamy sound, this song provides the cornerstone around which the album and its themes orbit. It’s inspired by the little old house where I grew up and all the memories captured within those four walls - both for me and for all the other inhabitants who’ve lived there over the centuries. It might just be another terraced cottage to passersby, but to those who’ve called it home, it’s everything. The album title The Pendulum Swing is taken from a line in this song and describes the urge to leave and the even stronger urge to return - something I’ve felt a lot in recent few years as I’ve tried to carve out a corner for myself elsewhere, but always found myself wandering back, craving the comfort and nostalgia of the past.It also sums up this second album as a whole quite nicely - my songs have matured since my debut, seeing as most of those were written in my childhood, but despite moving forward and feeling the need to do something different with this second release, I still can't help but return to those fundamental, unchanging things at the root of it all: home, family, love. Overall, I wanted this song and the album to feel lived in, and this is captured in part by the ghostly atmospheres, mechanical clockwork sounds, creaking floorboards, indistinct whispers and old tape recordings of my family that are littered throughout. I want to invite the listener to come in, sit down and inhabit the album for a little while, and this song is right at the heart of that.”Once again recorded in Birmingham by producer Simon J Weaver, guest musicians comprise John Smith (lead guitar), Harry Fausing Smith (strings), Marcus Hamblett (brass/double bass), George Boomsma (guitar, backing vocals, co-writer on track “Ready To Go”), Polly Virr (cello) and even a brief appearance from Priddy’s family members right at the end of the album, in keeping with its themes. With The Pendulum Swing, Priddy has managed to keep moving forward whilst acknowledging and honouring all that has gone before. For fans of Nick Drake and John Martyn. - Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 13 May 2024Another excellent CD from Katherine Priddy, her second. As ever, her lyrics really stand out for me, she is of poetic standard and the themes here are of home, love and relationships. The sound is rounded out by other musicians, including Simon J Weaver on synthesizer, among other things. Favourite track at the moment is Northern Sunrise and having just seen her live Ready To Go is a great show closer. The first album though, fo me, still has the edge in its more simpler delivery.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 June 2024Having heard Katherine's lovely performance on the Jools Holland show, I took the plunge and bought this superb collection of gentle, autobiographical songs. If you love great storytelling allied to beautifully subtle instrumentation then prepare to be delighted. This is a classic album which is crying out to be heard by the wider listening public.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 February 2024The' Eternal Rocks Beneath' was my favourite album of 2021. This will certainly be a contender for my album of 2024. I've only listened to it a couple of times but all the songs seem strong particularly 'First House on the Left' and 'Boat on the River'. Everything is delivered with that pure crystalline voice. Can't wait to see these songs performed live.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 March 2025Excellent follow-up second album. Catch Katherine live

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 March 2024What a great album. I have waited patiently for this since discovering Katherine, getting the first album on pink vinyl, seeing her live and now… this fabulous album. Such an amazing voice, thoughtful and impactful lyrics. Truly a great discovery and highly recommended. Is it better than the first album? Luckily it doesn’t matter. I have both. I love both. More please!!

Scarce DormouseReviewed in Germany on 1 June 20244.0 out of 5 stars Angenehm
Schöne LP zwischen Folk und Country, obwohl aus England, wurde von Richard Thompson, der immerhin mit Sandy Denny und Linda Thompson gearbeitet hatte, gelobt. Wunderbares grünes vinyl, sehr guter Klang, kaum Kinistern.
WarrenReviewed in the United States on 19 February 20245.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant.
Much like on her previous album, Katherine Priddy continues to explore the personal and the universal in this beautiful collection with a literary flair not often seen in any genre of contemporary music. The songs are richly textured, emotional and profound. The arrangements are complex, evocative and haunting — and there’s that remarkable voice and guitar playing!
Exceptional!
