Product description

Overview

Tattoo You celebrates 40 years with the release of a brand new deluxe remastered edition of the chart topping, multi platinum album. The 2CD edition of the album includes the newly remastered album alongside Lost & Found, a brand new collection of nine previously unreleased songs from the period of the album's original release, newly completed and enhanced with additional vocals and guitar by the band. Among these, 'Living In The Heart Of Love' is a quintessential Stones rock workout with all of the group on top form, complete with urgent guitar licks and fine piano detail.

Other highlights of Lost & Found include a killer version of 'Shame, Shame, Shame’, first recorded in 1963 by one of the band's blues heroes, Jimmy Reed; their reading of Dobie Gray's soul gem 'Drift Away'; and a fascinating reggae-tinged version of 'Start Me Up’.

Also included is a 20 page booklet including an essay from Jeff Slate.

Tattoo You first came out to pretty unanimous acclaim, and all these years later, it remains a frighteningly good album. From the lustful, pumping opener, 'Start Me Up' to Some Girls-esque, quick-fire 'Hang Fire' and bluesy 'Slave', you know you're onto a good thing. 'Little T&A' is one of Richards' best compositions in my opinion, and 'Neighbours', 'Heaven' and 'Worried About You' are also highlights. The album's closer, 'Waiting On A Friend' is just as timeless. All in all, a great album. And it sounds amazing in this anniversary collection. To be honest, I bought this album when I only knew about two of the songs on the second CD well. I thought it'd be one of those 'deluxe' bonus CDs you listen to once and never again. Not at all. Several of these 'Lost and Found' rarities could - and should - have ended up on the final album. 'Troubles A' Comin'' is one such track. Classic Stones. 'It's A Lie' and 'Drift Away' are also infectious and beautiful in equal measure. 'Living In The Heart of Love' proves a memorable highlight to me.In short, both CDs compliment eachother. And you wouldn't think you were listening to one finished album of outtakes and some other, okay stuff on the side. You'd think you'd just stuck on a double album of classic, Rolling Stones rock n' roll. Because that's what this is.As for the package, it really looks great. The CD booklet inside is comprehensive, and a really thoughtful touch. Suffers the same flaw that many digipacks do - in that it can be a bit hard at times to slide the CDs out. But the sleeve itself remains flexible, and I haven't suffered a tear yet. The text on the back is also pretty small and tough to read, but it's what inside that matters. And it delivers.

Great album !
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 18 March 2024
I remember buying Tattoo You the week it came out, 1981? of course these were still the vinyl days. I was about 17/18 and had been a stones fan for about a year! I didn't have all of their records at this point, it was mainly their 60's albums and a greatest hits album. Eventually I would have it all. But I have always loved this album, some great tracks on it including the classic "start me up" Keith's great performance on "little t&a" plus some beautiful ballads. But I have to be honest, I didn't buy this version for the remix, I brought it for the 2nd cd, "lost and found" which has some great unreleased tracks, a must buy for the true collector. Getting back to the remixed "tattoo you" it's very interesting listening because I heard vocal sounds and riffs that I have never noticed before, because a lot of the sound that you don't notice on the original mix has been brought up to the fore, it's very well done but I will always prefer the original mix. But for fans who want to hear this album differently then this is for you. Thanks to amazon for bringing this cd to my attention, well worth the money.

I bought - Start me up - on 7" single when first released in August 1981.this is the opening track on the Tattoo you album - released the following month and reaching no 2 on the UK albums chart.
I decided to move beyond the first track and forage the rest of the l.p.- a mere 40 (and a little bit) years later, with this expanded two disc 'deluxe' edition.
By and large; it is well worth the wait.a blend of Rolling Stones familiar rock n roll bombast and guitar licks - courtesy of Mick Jagger and Keith Richards - respectively - and other invaluable contributions from band members; Bill Wyman,Charlie Watts and Ronnie Wood make their mark on the album - as excpected.

Track 2: Hang fire and following track: Slave - a blues and jazz type song - with contributions from Billy Preston on keyboards and Sonny Rollins on saxophone (both legends in their own fields) - is a truly outstanding piece of music and one of my favourites on the album.
Little T & A - runs out of steam a little - quite repetitive and bland.but gets back on track with - the blusey - Black limousine (Jagger's harmonica playing is a pure delight),continuing with the socially observed: Neighbours - highlighting Keith Richards problems he was having at the time with his next door err..neighbours.
Worried about you - is another outstanding track: powerful and moving - not smaltzy - including guitar solo by Wayne Perkins - pre-Ronnie Wood becoming a permanent Stones member.
Skipping next two tracks; to highlight penultimate track: No use in crying - beautiful ballad with piano contribution from long-term RS session man - (the now late) Nicky Hopkins.
Final track: Waiting on a friend (second UK single release) - is a pleasant, reflective closer.drawing on the friendship within the Rolling stones members - lovely sentiment.
Has to be noted: the majority of tracks on disc one original album - are archive recordings and outtakes, and 'leftovers' from previously released RS albums I.e. Some girls,Black and blue and Exile on main street. This was due to the band undertaking a mammoth world tour in 1981-82; and they hadn't got the time to record a brand new album before it commenced.
On the whole: they pull it off,as it gells together after a few listens and gives the feel of a new album release.

Disc 2 on this re-issue dubbed: Lost & Found: includes further previously unreleased outtakes and demo recordings of the Stones.only this time, they have (reportedly) gone back in the studio to record additional parts for some of the songs.tweaking and enhancing them - apparently!
Highlights include three cover versions; Shame, shame, shame - originally by Bluesman Jimmy Reid (huge influence on the Rolling stones),Driftaway by Dobie Gray (superb lead vocals by Mick Jagger),Troubles A-comin' written by Eugene Record of US soul group - The Chil-lites.
Closing track on this second disc is an earlier reggae style version of - Start me up - and is a very interesting listen and inclusion.
Re-issue package includes 20 page booklet: crammed with info including; excellent sleeve notes on the era,Disc one track by track resumé and background into the making of: Tattoo you - by New York based - singer/songwriter and music journalist: Jeff Slate,Band photographs, full track by track musician credits (who played on what etc),thank you's,original and re-issue credits,hand-written lyrics for: Start me up and "uncle Tom cobbly and all"🤣
On the whole: a very good but not classic Rolling stones album - an excellent re- packaged 40th anniversary release of Tattoo you.
PS: original production by Chris Kimsey and re-mastered sound by latterday engineers - both sterling work,by the way.
One dissapointment: no stand-alone track listing for any songs on either discs - quite infuriating!
Whinge over: enjoy Tattoo you...

When I was at university I got a copy of this album on tape. That was 26 years ago! I recently chucked all my tapes as they were stretching and not worth listening to. So eventually I purchased a copy of Tattoo You on CD. I had it on my Wish List at Amazon with the hope that it would trigger me to buy when it came down in price. It never did, so I bought it for about £8-50. I've bought a few albums on CD recently but I must say this is the best for a while. Like I say in the title its like meeting an old friend after a long absence.
As an aside I saw them on this tour which was released as an album, Still Life in 1981. Even then it was said that this may be their last tour. They were great even though they played a few too many covers for me.
So what a start - Start Me Up - used to promote Windows 95 and Ford cars. This is an instantly recognisable classic which just may have suffered from a little too much airplay. However a classic it most certainly is. The rest of the album didn't get much airplay in fact I think Start Me Up was the album track played on the Still Life tour. However there are a further 4 classics on this album in my humble opinion. In running order they are Slave (awesome sax solo possibly one of the greatest album tracks by the Stones); Worried About You (great Mick falseto which is a feature of Tattoo You); No Use in Crying (lovely mellow track); and Waiting on a Friend (Mick laments the wait on a friend - definately not for a lady, of course not!). On top of those great tracks there's Little T&A which gets the Keith Richards vocal duties as on many other Stones albums before and since. Its a nice typical Stone stomp although feminists may baulk at the meaning of T&A! Hang Fire, Black Limousine and Neighbours are pretty good tracks. Tops and Heaven are the two which sit between good and filler in my opinion.
How does it compare to other Stones efforts? Well my favouites are Sticky Fingers, Let It Bleed and Beggars Banquet. Then there is Aftermath and Some Girls. So I think it sits there in the second tier of great Stones albums. Overall a brilliant album which is incredible as it was rushed to support the tour using outakes and unfinished tracks from previous albums.

Also geschaut was es für Remaster gibt.
Da ist wirklich was sehr Gutes gelungen.
