Mischief Maker: A Norse Mythology Contemporary Fantasy (Loki Redeemed Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 184 ratings

From the lead designer of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim comes an epic journey of Loki’s redemption. Where does a misunderstood Norse god hide a thousand years after Ragnarok? In the suburbs, of course. Loki is spending his days eking out a living as a stage magician when not one, but two attempts on his life force him to come out of exile.

Loki and his constant companion, Muninn the raven, return to the Nine Realms and Asgard. After he recovers his lost magic, Loki is forced to come to terms with what it means to be a god in modern times. Are the Aesir truly divine, or just people with extraordinary abilities? Loki certainly doesn’t feel very godly.

As he wanders the fabled lands of the elves, dwarves, and giants, Loki finds new friends and old enemies. Behind the attempts on his life is the impending threat of a second Ragnarok. The victors write history, and the surviving gods of Asgard painted Loki as the villain. He now has a shot at redemption, and a chance to stop Thor from committing genocide. Can motorcycles and guns defeat swords and sorcery?

Dive into this fresh take on Norse mythology and join the reluctant hero, Loki, as he takes on Thor to save the Nine Realms.

Mischief Maker could be one of the best stories you read this year. Try it today.

I'm a midwest guy born and bred. At least I thought I was until I moved to the east coast. Now I'm a bit of both. I love different things about each of those two areas of the country. Professionally, each contributed something different to my career path.

I started out working for TSR, Inc. in Wisconsin. I did two tours of duty there, as a programmer for a bit, but primarily as a writer and game designer. I wrote all kinds of things from Dungeons & Dragons materials, Marvel Superheroes products, Gamma World supplements, and board games. I had the great honor of turning Tracy Hickman's Ravenloft adventure into a campaign setting.

Eventually, I left the halls of TSR, Inc. for the green, Maryland pastures of Bethesda Softworks, maker of video games. I worked on Elder Scrolls games and Fallout games. I had a second great honor of being the lead designer on The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

Throughout all of this, I've had a love of fantasy and science fiction, in books, movies, and games.

You'll see a partial list of game products I've worked on in this author page. Unfortunately, Amazon doesn't have all of my products in its catalog. You can also find me on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/Bruce-Nesmith-Author-103769655138160

I have always been intrigued by the old stories of Loki and Thor and while most show Thor as good and Loki as bad it has never really touched on what of Loki was the good god.
This book did just that and showed no one is either just good or bad and even gods make mistakes.
A great read which doesn’t get lost down the hole of too many details into mythology.
My son aged 11 has also read it and really enjoyed it!

Although the storyline was good and so were the characters. I found the writing style just slow and difficult to focus on. Took me several breaks to finish the book.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book or journey might be a better description. The characters are believable and you get swept on in the flow of the novel, it's almost like your living the events as Loki himself this comes across as the book is written from mainly the point of view of Loki. It took almost two pages for me to get hooked, and I would recommend anyone to get this title as in my opinion it would appeal to a vast range of individual. Looking forward to reading more from Bruce.

I enjoyed this book so much, I found it hard to put down. I found it really easy to read, with a flowing style. I look forward to reading more from this author.

Norse mythology and Loki! I love mythology, full stop! This book takes us on a journey and it feels like you almost are Loki. It is told from Loki's point of view mainly, so it's very easy to get into his way of thinking.
The characters feel so real and the storytelling flows so well I felt like I was immersed in Loki's world too. It has everything need to make it a fabulous fantasy, God's, Valkyries, giants, love and adventure. I was in my element! A book that I struggled to tear myself away from. Brilliantly different!

5.0 out of 5 stars Is there life for the gods after Ragnarök?

I totally enjoy stories where Loki is not the villain but just a mischief maker. This was an interesting take on what Asgard and the rest of the Norse gods ended up after Ragnarök. Loki spent his years on Earth living like a normal person. I cannot say a lot more without spoilers but it is a very good read and ends with a hint of what could come next.

4.0 out of 5 stars A fresh take on a great pantheon
Reviewed in the United States on 23 September 2021
This novel had an excellent twist to old tales. Making Loki a modern day magician was brilliant. The author made him clever and yes, mischievous, witty, and very resourceful. Many of his other characters also had quite a bit of uniqueness to them. The vale of Idunn's fruit. Hel as a child? Sviarr and the concept of Surtr were brilliant. Yymd and the Jotun chant. Ullr and his skills. Having Loki travel to many places, bond with many people, have himself clever a way out of things, yes I know, not a real expression, and much more made this an excellent story. I won't give it away as I always say that a person should buy a book and discover more of it for themselves. There's an ingenuous plot twist and the ending and why give that away? I'd recommend it fans of Norse mythology for sure.

Why four stars? Because it's lucid, well-crafted, inventive, and at the heart of it, a good story. The road to hell is paved in good intentions. It's actually paved with them. There were a few other miscues such as that. A few other pretty glaring gaffes. Esme appearing where she did at the climax is questionable for sure. Nobody noticed her? Baldr is argr and so is Loki? Why then does Loki bed down so frequently with Yvla? That's questionable for sure. Thor has the IQ of a potato, a bit of a stretch even for the Thor of mythology. Frigg asking Loki why doesn't he kill her? Well, because she can best him, that's why. Loki's threat to Frigg at the end was overdone. It's things like this, some of them anyway, that make a book have talking points and that's part of what a good book does, gives its readers things to debate and discuss.

Great story and an ending that will make your eyes pop open. Loki, Hel, Odin, Munin, Dvergar, Alfar, and more plus one one very stubborn woman. I started reading in the morning, neglected everything I was supposed to do. Now it’s dark. I’ll get up to turn on a light and start the next book.

This is a fine high fantasy adventure novel. It is well written and edited. The ravens are a hoot. I anxiously await the sequel.

I loved the voice of Loki, the sarcasm and the bluntness. Each part of the story kept pushing me to read it and honestly it was mostly a binge read. I can't wait to start on the second one.
