Product description

  • Comprises three of the most important dub albums ever released
  • Includes eight previously unreleased tracks
  • Seminal Treasure Dub albums unavailable on CD for 25 years

From the 1950s, when his sound system ruled Kingston’s dancehalls, through to his untimely passing early in 1975, Arthur ‘Duke’ Reid remained a giant of the Jamaican music industry, playing, promoting and producing some of the most important and influential recordings ever to see issue on the island.

Such was the quality of his work that long after his old friend, Sonia Pottinger had acquired his Treasure Isle studio and catalogue, demand for his productions persisted, prompting the regular reissue of his hits, be they in original form, as remixes, DJ cuts or dub versions.

Fortunately, in Errol Brown, Pottinger had in her employ one of Jamaica’s foremost sound engineers, whose talents at the mixing desk ensured the high quality of any reinterpretations of Reid’s work, as evidenced by a trio of dub albums he oversaw in the mid-Seventies.

These three seminal long-players provide the focus for this essential 2CD set, with disc one comprising both volumes of “Treasure Dub” and disc two featuring “Pleasure Dub” along with a host of rare and previously unissued bonus dub cuts from the period. The result is arguably the finest collection of classic dub music for decades!

5.0 out of 5 stars ロックステディのダブ

    以前、出ていたtreasure isle dub vol.1&2と、同内容だと思われます。
    内容はロックステディのダブと言った趣きで、ルーツやダンスホール系のダブよりはおとなしめですが、十分、楽しめました。

4.0 out of 5 stars THREE IMPORTANT '70S DUKE REID DUB ALBUMS REMIXED BY ERROL BROWN--PLUS BONUS SINGLES.
Reviewed in the United States on 21 September 2019
This release collects three dub albums from the '70s from Duke Reid's Treasure Isle label. They were remixed by the great Errol Brown using some great rhythms from the rock steady period. Disc 1 has the "Treasure Dub Vol. 1 & 2" sets. Disc 2 has the "Pleasure Dub" album, plus a number of fairly rare or unissued tracks from that same period.

The 10 page booklet has a good essay on the music plus repros of record labels and a b&w photo of McCook, a complete track list, and a list of musicians. The band is Tommy McCook & The Supersonics which includes a fairly large number of players. The sound is very good overall, fairly crisp and clean, with a slight period warmth to the sound.

I was hoping to single out a few tracks as representative of the albums, but the caliber of music and remixing is so uniformly high that its pretty tough to do. Suffice to say if you're into dub, this 2 CD set is worth your time and money. Brown has done a good job remixing these sides using Reid's arrangements. The remixes sound organic and are straight out of that whole period of dub music before more modern techniques were incorporated into mixing dub tracks, and losing some of the warmth of dub music.

The bonus tracks include things like "I See Your Face Version", "Moonlight Dub" "It's You I Dub", "Baby I Dub You", and other great tracks from the '70s. This collection is old school dub, with vocals floating in and out of the mixes along with a strong instrumental rhythm track. The band is tight and tough sounding, and Brown uses only period techniques for his remixes without any hint of more modern techniques.

This set is well worth your while if you're into '70s era dub. Bottom line--this is the real deal dub using Duke Reid's tracks and the remixing talents of Errol Brown. One of the better dub sets released in some time.
