This is a proper story – one that although as an historian I have some reservations about the events in the narrative I could not help but keep turning the pages to see what would happen next. More complex than the previous two instalments of the Chronicles, and very much more dramatic. By this stage the characters from the first two books – and especially John and Margaret – are more broadly explored, and the ‘will it, won’t it?’ nature of the action is well sustained.
As for my reservations concerning historical accuracy, once again I find that in view of the quality of the storytelling, none of them really matter. People are not going to read this as the literal truth but as an entertaining piece of fiction about an age of which they will know little, if anything at all. It tells them a lot about that time and the ways people lived and things were done, in a way they will enjoy.
I hope the book does well and repays the skill and effort the author has put into it. It really is a ‘good read’.
